Dear Utah School Librarians,
Below you will find important information regarding the legislation and board rule that affect school libraries. I will be offering office hours next week to help answer any questions and concerns you may have. See below for those dates and times.
R277-628 Amended On Friday, June 7, the Utah State Board of Education amended Board Rule R277-628 to support HB29. HB29https://le.utah.gov/~2024/bills/static/HB0029.html is effective on July 1, 2024. Board Rule is effective after the Public Notice period; however, attached is a copy of the amended rule for reference as you review and revise your policies.
LEA-Appointed Representative Each LEA(district or charter) has designated one representative to report sensitive material challenges to USBE and that LEA-appointed representative will receive the USBE form for reporting their challenges.
Resources The following resources have been created to support implementation of both HB29 & Board Rule R277-628. They will be housed under Statutes and Rules on the USBE websitehttps://www.schools.utah.gov/curr/librarymedia after they are adapted for ADA compliance.

LEAs have the duty to select instructional materials that best correlate to the core standards for Utah public schools and graduation requirements. (UCA 53G-4-402(1(a)). Posting of resources by USBE staff curriculum content specialists does not imply the resources have received official endorsement of the State Board. Educators are responsible to ensure use of these materials complies with LEA policies and directives.
To clarify, the office hours will be held on Thursday, June 27 at 10am.
