INFO: Summer Writing & Reading Challenges

Happy (almost) summertime, Secondary ELA Folks! I'm sharing two opportunities for personal and professional enrichment this summer: 1) a 30-day writing challenge, and 2) a summer reading challenge. 30-Day Summer Writing Challenge Unlike January's writing challenge, this summer 30-day challenge is much more choose-your-own adventure, and we are joined by secondary ELA educators in Arizona, Kentucky, Montana, and Oklahoma! All 30 writing invitations are provided up front in the calendar (see attached), which lets you choose when and how you'd like to complete the 30 days of writing. Want to write 30 days in a row? Great! Want to take your time throughout the summer break? Also great! Want to pick and choose from the invitations that resonate with you? Also an option! This challenge is an opportunity to flex your writing skills and habit - or continue what you've already developed. Summer Reading Book Bingo Card Are you wanting to spend some of summer break reading for pleasure, but you are in need of suggestions or want to break out of a reading rut? Then, feel free to use the Summer Reading Book Bingo Card (also attached) to expand and support your pleasure reading. Unfortunately, no bingo prizes (or personal pan pizzas) are guaranteed to arrive on your doorstep, if you participate. Both opportunities are optional. Enjoy! On Thursday, May 2 & Friday May 3, the Utah State Board of Education met and discussed Sensitive Materials legislation & Board Rule R277-628: School Libraries. No Action was taken, except to move the item to the June 6th board meeting. May's Secondary ELA webinar will occur on Wednesday, May 8th from 4:00-5:00pm MST. We will be joined by educators in Arizona, Kentucky, and Ohio. Topic: Restoring Humanity to Striving Adolescent Readers We know literacy ability -- and gaps in literacy ability -- have far-reaching consequences for students across the lifespan, including lasting perceptions of their identity and place in society. The recording and resources for "Writing Remixed: Composing in Digital & Multimodal Genres" webinar with Dr. Amber Jensen, BYU English Professor and Director of the Central Utah Writing Project (CUWP), is now available. The workshop, held at BYU from 8:00 am - 4:30 pm, June 10 - 14, is an opportunity for teachers to write together, develop and implement insights about tailoring writing instruction for student writers of all ages, and learn from each other's practice. This workshop will be facilitated by CUWP Fellows Craig Jeppson (CUWP '13), social studies teacher at Wasatch HS, and Regan Gull (CUWP '14), ELA teacher at Skyridge HS. Participants can earn 3.0 university credits or 45 PD points for full participation. This is a good fit for veteran and/or new teachers, including current CUWP Fellows.
