Dear Secondary ELA Leaders and Educators: This is your invitation to connect your students with bestselling author mentors like Neal Shusterman, Marissa Meyer, Jeff Kinney, Dhonielle Clayton, Christopher Paolini, and more than 80 more top authors and industry professionals! At Operation Literacy, 501c3 Nonprofit, we join with educators in our efforts to inspire young writers and readers and empower them to tell their own unique stories. For years, we’ve brought you Teen and Tween Author Boot Camp as some of the nation’s largest writing conferences for kids. Educators like To build upon this program and ensure greater impact and access for your students, we’ve merged the two conferences, adding programming tracks for educators and general audiences to form StoryCon, held February 21st and 22nd, 2025, at the Salt Palace Convention Center At StoryCon your students will: * Connect - with our powerful community of aspiring and bestselling authors. (See our full list of headliners at Storycon.org<http://storycon.org/>) * Create - by learning skills that empower students to tell their authentic stories in our amazing list of Teen Classes * Become - the author, playwright, screenwriter, game developer, journalist, or storyteller they’ve always wanted to be. While students learn and celebrate story, teachers and librarians may attend a two-day educator conference track. This includes classes and keynotes taught by internationally bestselling authors, networking opportunities, a vast expo hall of bookish and education-focused vendors, giveaways, and up to 5 SUU graduate credits for attendees. Access and equity, especially for students from Title 1 populations, is at the core of our mission. To make StoryCon affordable for students of all backgrounds, we’ve accumulated a vast array of funding resources<http://storycon.org/schoolfunding> including scholarships, school group discounts with free educator passes, pre-written funding application letters, and more. As you may know, artificial intelligence has become an important topic in our educational community. In an effort to create collaboration on AI topics, the Utah State Board of Education will host a series of AI Summits across Utah in September. INFO: Literacy Intervention in the Middle Grades Fall '24 Book Study Cohort

Join a cohort of 30 Utah educators in grades 4+ to develop knowledge and skills in literacy intervention in the middle grades! (While priority is given to educators in grades 4-8, the cohort is open to educators who teach grades 9-12, too). Note attached flyer. This cohort will participate in a virtual, synchronous book study of Literacy Intervention in the Middle Grades: Word Learning, Comprehension, and Strategy Instruction, Grades 4-8<https://www.guilford.com/books/Literacy-Intervention-in-the-Middle-Grades/F…> with added professional learning support and opportunity to implement your learning with your students. * Digital book copies are free for cohort members * 1.5 USBE credit offered for active participation (must attend 80% of live book study meetings, complete reflections, and submit evidence of classroom implementation to receive credit) Virtual Synchronous Book Study Meetings (via Zoom) will meet on the following Tuesdays from 3:45 - 5:00pm: * September 17 * October 1 * October 15 * November 5 * November 19 * December 3 * January 7 * January 21 These book study meetings will be led by USBE Secondary ELA Specialist, Dr. Naomi Watkins, and will provide an opportunity for you to deepen and extend your learning from the readings, collaborate with colleagues across Utah, and provide you with additional practice to implement your learnings with your students.
