From tj at uen.org Tue Sep 7 13:00:31 2010 From: tj at uen.org (Troy Jessup) Date: Tue, 7 Sep 2010 13:00:31 -0600 Subject: [tforum] UtahSAINT Security Conference Registration Open Message-ID: All, We are happy to announce the upcoming UtahSAINT Conference. We have been planning and preparing for this conference for well over 6 months, and will be one of the best security training conferences we have ever had. The UtahSAINT Conference will be held October 12-15th, 2010 at the Taylor Health Sciences Center of Dixie State College in St. George, Utah. This is the same location it was held at last year. TRAINING FOCUS Due in most part to feedback from the membership, we have changed the structure of the conference to focus very heavily on useful training. The training sessions provided at this conference have been planned to provide in-depth training and hands-on exercises. We can promise that you will not only hear about a security topic during this conference, but will receive comprehensive training on it as well. COSTS AND TRAVEL The costs for this conference have increased to cover the additional costs of workbooks/manuals and other tools and utilities required to provide the in-depth training necessary for a successful conference. As usual, the registration fee's gathered for the conference cover just our direct costs and are as low as absolutely possible. Additional expenses are subsidized by UEN. The cost for the UtahSAINT Conference will be on 2 Tiers. The base cost will be $135.00/person. Attendees who would like to also have a hard-copy of the workbooks and materials will be charged an additional $25-30. You will be able to choose to have a copy of the materials at the time of registration. A Digital Copy of all materials will be provided at no cost at the base price. Travel costs are your responsibility as usual. We recommend that you stay in one of the hotels close to the venue. The recommended hotels along with any special pricing will be displayed on the website as soon as those issues are finalized. We encourage you to get your hotel arrangements worked out early, because the Sr. Olympic Games are held during the same timeframe and usually congest the number of available rooms. REGISTRATION Registration for the conference is now open to the public. To register, please visit the Conference Website at: http://www.utahsaint.org/ LIMITED SEATING Seating at the conference is limited, and with the huge growth in attention the UtahSAINT group and conference has received this past year, we expect seats to sell-out quickly. Please plan on registering early. The conference is limited to 150 participants (unless we make some arrangements we are working on happen). AT THE TIME OF THIS MESSAGE, THE CONFERENCE IS ALREADY OVER HALF FULL. CONFERENCE AGENDA The agenda is being finalized and will be posted on the UtahSAINT Website in the next 2 days. It is guaranteed to provide you hours of brain-wracking pleasure and frustration. We really hope you enjoy this game, and we hope to make it a tradition at UtahSAINT Conferences. STAR PARTY The UtahSAINT Conference has a "stary" theme this year, and we cannot think of anything more fun than to take one of the evenings and let people take a look through a variety of telescopes under the direction of a skilled amateur astronomer. So come with you iPad and your cool Star Walk applications. MUCH MORE There are even more in the plans, for an enjoyable time at the Conference. We will let you know what they are when the appropriate times arrive. -- Troy Jessup -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... UEN has had a lot of discussion regarding this event, its impact on the network, and ways to ensure you have a good experience with streaming. The stream is expected to be available at the following URL: http://www.whitehouse.gov/live at 1p Eastern Current Information about the event can be found at: http://www.whitehouse.gov/back-to-school This year, the expectation is that this event will be carried in many more schools throughout the State than it was last year. During this event last year, the UEN backbone was easily able to handle the sharp increase of bandwidth. We expect that this year, even with the increases in demand that the UEN backbone will easily handle the traffic. Our greatest concern with this event is that there are still no details regarding how the stream will be distributed by the White House. We have contacted the WhiteHouse Press office and at this time there are no details regarding the stream, its capacity, or if it will be broadcast on any of the major news outlets. We anticipate that if the stream is more popular this year, that the streaming servers could become congested. We are also concerned about potential distribution platform issues within customer networks, and want to bring attention to the impact that multiple streams to a single site could potentially have. At this point, it is unclear at best how stable the stream will be. If there are issues, it will most likely be at the source of the stream and its capacity. We will however monitor the network very closely, especially during this event and ensure that this traffic is optimized as possible. UEN RECOMMENDATIONS When using the network to stream this event, please work to consolidate the viewing venues to as few as possible (1-2 Per School). We recommend that you use a projector in a large meeting room wherever possible to accommodate as many viewers as possible. PLEASE AVOID using entire computer labs and individual streams to each computer, this has the potential to overwhelm some local networks and contributes the the overall impact for everyone. If the event is broadcast over the Air (which is still unclear), we recommend that you make the appropriate arrangements to use this method as either a primary or backup display for the live event where possible. UEN POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS UEN is working toward acquiring a clean copy of the live event for re-broadcast on delay, or later in the day. This option is still being worked on and there are many things which could make this option difficult, including licensing of content and re-broadcast restrictions, and potential impact on other production systems. We will keep you up to date on this initiative, and let you know if we can somehow provide a local stream for this event. --UEN Technical Services Management -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... It will begin at 11:00a MDT. The purpose of this email is to give the latest update on the potential impact this will have on network resources. We have heard from MANY sites planning on carrying this event live. This stream is available Live from the http://www.whitehouse.gov/live website. We have also learned that the stream will be distributed this year using the Akamai network. This means that the stream should be cleaner than last year's event. We are told that an Archive stream will also be available shortly after the event in the event the timeframe does not work for you to watch it live. We continue to recommend that you do not congest your networks by having entire computer labs all streaming the event at the same time. This may be possible without impact, but should be avoided. In the event you experience network issues, we are told that CNN, MSNBC, and CSPAN will also be covering the event Live for those of you with Cable TV capability in the schools. We will be watching this event closely, and everything on the backbone indicates that we are ready for this event. --TROY -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
