Hello all,

Welcome to the first Thursday UEN Engineering update.  I know it is Friday =
and I am late with this message for good reason.  Attached please find a =
white paper penned by Troy Jessup and Pete Kruckenberg on how to block =
Peer-to-Peer connections.  With all of the recent concern with Peer-to-Peer=
, copyright violations and the spread of porn using PtP technologies I'm =
sure you will find this information helpful and useful.

Engineering activity is the past two weeks has been centered primarily on =
security concerns and making the UEN network more safe.  I'm sure many of =
you are aware of the activity in this area.  Here is a highlight of =
current activities:

-Evaluation of proposals to a additional internet bandwidth RFP and an RFP =
for statewide services
-ATM traffic engineering best practices as it relates to rate limiting =
(I.E. Hub paradise part II)
-Media streaming pilots (will be reported on next week)
-Network Management tools (see detail below)
-Several more white papers are in the works (single vrs. multiple vendors, =
Fusion-the good and the bad)
-Traffic engineering redesigns for: Alpine, Davis, Jordan and Salt Lake =
districts
-several vendor evaluations and lab tests

Over the past several months as a joint effort between Operations and =
Engineering the following Phase I objectives of the Network management and =
reporting tools project have been met.  Kudos go out to all that have been =
involved with this project esp. Geoff Slater, Tony Bueno and James Brown =
(our Network Management and Reporting super stars):

-Product suite implemented on all UEN network devices
-Established and implemented Network Management device configuration =
standards
-Provide a graphical view of all UEN devices
-Availability monitoring and fault alerting for all UEN network devices =
with new tools
-Accounting, configuration and asset management for all UEN network =
devices
-Web accessible availability, performance and capacity reporting for all =
UEN network devices
-Rollout to UEN technical services staff

(We will be reporting on this activity and providing demos of these =
exciting new capabilities in upcoming HUB and state wide T-forums.)

Phase II objectives being worked on:

-Rollout reporting tools to UEN partners
-Implement SLA reporting
