Online High School Field Testing for Epidemiology Lessons and Simulation

We invite high school teachers who are teaching a life science course in grades 10-12 (biology, anatomy and physiology, environmental science, or life science selections) to participate in the pre-mission lessons and Pandem-Sim live, role-play simulation (http://pandemsim.com/evaluation.html) conducted via videoconferencing. Students act as field epidemiologists to prepare case definitions, create epigraphs, diagnose infectious diseases, and develop public health reports. Students and teachers complete pre- and post-surveys. Teachers also provide formative feedback for improving the simulation. Students in all of the Pandem projects learn about career-related opportunities and preparation for them. There is no cost for any materials, and teachers receive a stipend of $150.00 and a simulation experience worth $550.

Our field testing runs from now through April 2018. As part of our NIH-focused diversity recruitment, we especially encourage teachers from racial and ethnic groups shown to be underrepresented nationally to participate.

For additional information, please visit our website at http://pandemsim.com/evaluation.html and contact Dr. Debbie Tyrrell at dtyrrell at wju.edu<mailto:dtyrrell at wju.edu> or 412-370-5553.

Dear colleagues,

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and I would to share stories about any work you or others have done to help and/or learn about threatened species. Photos and/or video of students in action can be really compelling. For example, Sarah Levy from USFWS put together this video which you can share about a school that makes fence markers to help sage-grouse<https://youtu.be/N67euue5XuM>. We'd love to tell more great stories to inspire others to act!

We'd also greatly appreciate you continuing to help us spread the word about the free sagebrush ecosystem curriculum and supporting resources<https://www.fws.gov/greatersagegrouse/education.php>. USFWS recently teamed up with the BLM to print more posters<https://www.fws.gov/greatersagegrouse/documents/Education/Sagebrush%20Ecosystem%20Poster%20HighRes.pdf> and teacher's guides<https://www.fws.gov/greatersagegrouse/documents/Education/Sagebrush_Ecosystem_Curriculum_FINAL.pdf>, and there is a waiting list for the trunks of hands-on resources, so USFWS is working with Audubon Rockies to create more of them.

Finally, I wanted to let you know about a few upcoming training opportunities:

  * Next Friday, Mar. 2, I will be leading a hands-on workshop about the curriculum, etc. and passing out materials at the Idaho Environmental Education Conference<https://idahoee.org/2018conference/schedule/> in Lewiston, ID.
  * Michelle Hunt of the USFWS and I will be teaming up with the Desert Research Institute on Saturday, April 21 in Reno, NV to offer a FREE hands-on workshop, resources, and more (details attached; registration will open on the DRI website<https://sciencealive.dri.edu/> soon, or folks can RSVP with me).
  * Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks will soon be teaming up for a FREE Sage Grouse Challenge for middle and high school students (details attached).
  * Recorded webinars are available here<https://www.fws.gov/greatersagegrouse/education.php>.
  * I can work with you to offer free workshops in your neck of the woods, too.
Feel free to call any time with questions or ideas about how we might collaborate: 503-380-4140. We hope all's well, and that you're getting excited about the sage-grouse lekking season and live Lek Cam which will be viewable on the Nature Conservancy website again this spring<https://www.nature.org/ourinitiatives/regions/northamerica/unitedstates/oregon/our-priorities/sage-grouse-lek-cam.xml>!

Sincerely,

Safeguarding Heritage Sites in the Middle East - March 8, 2018

[cid:ef2a689e-4949-433e-969c-d843c55f2bb9]

Damage to archaeological and historic sites is ongoing on a grand scale in the Middle East due to the current conflicts in the region. World-wide, people are working to do what they can to preserve what remains and discourage further destruction. In this lecture, Blythe McCarthy of the Smithsonian's Freer|Sackler will discuss these and other aspects of programs to protect and preserve cultural heritage in Iraq and Syria that she worked on during her recent experience as a AAAS Science and Technology Policy Fellow at the Department of State's Cultural Heritage Center.

PASCO Spectrometer for Biology and Chemistry - April 25, 2018 12:30 PM - 2:00 PM PST

We will show you how PASCO's Wireless Spectrometer is used in Advanced Biology and Chemistry courses. The Spectrometer is a Bluetooth device that allows the user to see the absorbance or transmittance of a sample solution.

For the Biologists, we will analyze the catalyzed decomposition of hydrogen peroxide, an enzymatic reaction that can be monitored using guaiacol. We will also look at the absorbance of the chlorophyll molecule and relate it to pigment color and photosynthetic activity.

Then for the Chemists, we will develop a Beer's Law curve and determine the concentration of an unknown solution with the help of the software's easy to use displays. After that, we will determine the order of a Crystal Violet and NaOH reaction from its absorbance curve.

Finally, we'll attach a fiber optic cable to the Spectrometer and will look at the emission spectra from hydrogen and use the software to identify the element from reference lines.

Bonus: Throughout the webinar, we'll compare the Wireless Spectrometer to the new Wireless Colorimeter.

Learn the skills to make a difference in science education policy.

The American Association of Physics Teachers and the American Institute of Physics believe classroom teachers can (and should) be policy leaders. Through a program funded by the AIP Venture Partnership Fund, we seek to engage, empower and support K-12 classroom teachers of physics and physical science (including elementary teachers) as agents of change in physics education.

Get compensated for your expenses.

Funding will be provided for travel, meals and accommodations for two summer workshops in Washington, DC. Following the first summer workshop, participants will be expected to carry out their strategic plans for policy engagement during the 2018-2019 academic year.

Choose your passion and engage others in your community.

Using a "problem-based learning approach," Fellows will use the workshop to explore solutions to their identified policy issue, learn about case studies in science policy from experienced science policy leaders and receive feedback from high profile people in local, state and national science education policy.

  *   Legislative Action
  * District guidelines for professional practice
  * State-level implementation of standards for learning and teacher professional development
  * Availability of funds for content growth
  * Equitable access to physics and physical science across all schools or grade levels
  * Curricular materials and instructional resources
  * Framework for K-12 Science Education and NGSS
