Aug 1 - 3, 2018 ________________________________ Dear colleagues, The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and I would to share stories about any work you or others have done to help and/or learn about threatened species. Photos and/or video of students in action can be really compelling. For example, Sarah Levy from USFWS put together this video which you can share about a school that makes fence markers to help sage-grouse. We'd love to tell more great stories to inspire others to act! We'd also greatly appreciate you continuing to help us spread the word about the free sagebrush ecosystem curriculum and supporting resources. USFWS recently teamed up with the BLM to print more posters and teacher's guides, and there is a waiting list for the trunks of hands-on resources, so USFWS is working with Audubon Rockies to create more of them. Finally, I wanted to let you know about a few upcoming training opportunities: * Michelle Hunt of the USFWS and I will be teaming up with the Desert Research Institute on Saturday, April 21 in Reno, NV to offer a FREE hands-on workshop, resources, and more (details attached; registration will open on the DRI website soon, or folks can RSVP with me). * Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks will soon be teaming up for a FREE Sage Grouse Challenge for middle and high school students (details attached). * Recorded webinars are available here. * I can work with you to offer free workshops in your neck of the woods, too. Feel free to call any time with questions or ideas about how we might collaborate: 503-380-4140. We hope all's well, and that you're getting excited about the sage-grouse lekking season and live Lek Cam which will be viewable on the Nature Conservancy website again this spring! April 7, 2018 The University of Utah?s Chemistry Department will hold its final teacher?s workshop for this academic year on Saturday, April 7th in the Thatcher Building (TBBC) room 4630 starting at 8:00 AM on the main campus of the University of Utah. At 8:00AM the Chemistry Department?s Dr. Michael Morse will kick off the workshop with his insights into ?acids and bases.? After Dr. Morse?s lecture Richard Scott from the State Office of Education will talk to us about new things happening at the state level. Shortly after he finishes Dr. Brock Casselman, a new U of U PhD, will tell you how his research into student performance at the U is applicable to high school classes. Our outside speaker this year is Dr. Vicente Talanquer from the University of Arizona. His workshop topic "Ambitious Chemistry Teaching" will focus on engaging teachers in an approach to teaching chemistry that emphasizes modeling, creating arguments, and building explanations to help students develop meaningful understandings. There will be a breakfast snack in the AM and a catered lunch. Usually we finish about 12:30 to 1:00 PM. Please RSVP to Whitney Hills, w.hills at utah.edu, if you can attend this event as we must order food for the event. There is no cost to you or your district other than your transportation to the workshop. We would be happy to have as many teachers as can fit in the room. Charles H. The Spectrometer is a Bluetooth device that allows the user to see the absorbance or transmittance of a sample solution. For the Biologists, we will analyze the catalyzed decomposition of hydrogen peroxide, an enzymatic reaction that can be monitored using guaiacol. We will also look at the absorbance of the chlorophyll molecule and relate it to pigment color and photosynthetic activity. Then for the Chemists, we will develop a Beer?s Law curve and determine the concentration of an unknown solution with the help of the software?s easy to use displays. After that, we will determine the order of a Crystal Violet and NaOH reaction from its absorbance curve. Finally, we'll attach a fiber optic cable to the Spectrometer and will look at the emission spectra from hydrogen and use the software to identify the element from reference lines. Bonus: Throughout the webinar, we'll compare the Wireless Spectrometer to the new Wireless Colorimeter. Interested but can?t attend live? I am sending this email to multiple email lists so you may receive this email more than once (I apologize for that in advance). UPDATE: On March 15th the Utah State Board of Education failed to approve the writing process and asked that I return with some addition information for the April 12th Board meeting. This has obviously postponed the standards writing team selection process and for this reason no one has been notified as being a member of a writing team. Please know that if the State Board of Education passes the writing team process in the April 12th Board meeting, team leaders will be selected and they will meet to choose their teams based on the qualifications of those that have applied. After teams have been selected all writing team applicants will be contacted and notified if they were selected for a team or not. Please be patient and know that these emails may not be sent until the end of April or beginning of May. Although we don't have all the answers at this time, we created a Frequently Asked Questions FAQ document to help answer your questions. You can access the document at: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1ojbM9J-LEzyvw4pW507xo4gv7fpwqJrL3nqa9T8Z1tk/edit If you have additional questions about the process or writing committee application that you would like me to add to the FAQ document, please email them to me. From: Scott, Richard Sent: Wednesday, November 29, 2017 6:22 PM To: 'science at lists.uen.org' Subject: Online Application to be a Writer for Utah K-5/9-12 Science Standards Dear Teachers, As you may be aware, the Utah State Board of Education approved that the standards revision process begin for K-5 and 9-12 science standards in the November State Board Meeting. While there are a few steps in the USBE's Standard Revisions Process that must happen before writing can begin, we are looking to start getting applications from teachers and leaders interested in participating in the writing committees. If you are interested in applying to be on a K-5th grade or secondary subject Standards Writing Committee please take some time to fill out the following online application: https://goo.gl/forms/5dKG4OPQnWsn1ves2. Please note that this application may take several minutes to complete. We ask you to be clear and concise in your responses. Please understand that spaces on these writing committees will be limited with only a total of 80 participants for all of the ten grades approved for revision. Each elementary grade and core secondary science subject will have leaders appointed by USBE that will select the participants that will work on their writing committees. Writing committee leaders will look to ensure that there is paticipation in the process from throughout the state as well as applicants' education, experience, leadership, additional skills, etc. Be sure to complete the application by January 12, 2018. The application will close at that time. Selection for these committees will not happen until January or February 2018. All applicants will receive an email notifying them if they are or are not selected for a writing committee. If you have questions please let me know. Students act as field epidemiologists to prepare case definitions, create epigraphs, diagnose infectious diseases, and develop public health reports. Students and teachers complete pre- and post-surveys. Teachers also provide formative feedback for improving the simulation. Students in all of the Pandem projects learn about career-related opportunities and preparation for them. There is no cost for any materials, and teachers receive a stipend of $150.00 and a simulation experience worth $550. Our field testing runs from now through April 2018. As part of our NIH-focused diversity recruitment, we especially encourage teachers from racial and ethnic groups shown to be underrepresented nationally to participate. For additional information, please visit our website at http://pandemsim.com/evaluation.html and contact Dr. Debbie Tyrrell at dtyrrell at wju.edu or 412-370-5553. ________________________________ Utah Master Naturalist courses as professional development Professional development opportunities help educators increase their knowledge and skills in teaching about Utah's natural world. Sincerely, Rick Reynolds, M.S. Register anyway and we?ll automatically email you a link to the session recording about a day after it's held. Register anyway and we?ll automatically email you a link to the session recording about a day after it's held. Some main highlights for this year: * Links to websites have been cleaned of broken links and shortened using a URL shortener program from UEN that will clear most LEA website filters * Updates to content and clarity in the 6th, 7th, and 8th Grade SEEd textbooks * Physics textbooks have added a new chapter to address content that is added in physics classes when taught as Physics with Tech. We want your OER Feedback As always, we need your feedback with these books. We hope that as you use these books, when you find problems or areas that need to be address or fixed that you let us know by using the online feedback form - https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/USOEScienceOER OER Textbook formats and links The 2018-19 Utah OER Science Textbooks for grades 3-12 are available in the following formats: * Free PDF download - https://drive.google.com/drive/u/3/folders/154zrLB31M7Fve6zvSR6tqT7bCJ96BY50 o These PDF files are free to download. They can be uploaded on to student devices or used to print copies in-house. * Printed versions are available to purchase from BR Printers - https://utah-science.myshopify.com/ o Please note that some LEAs have blocked sites from myshopify.com and this link may not open in your school. You will need to order books from home or contact Greg Velasquez from BR Printers at greg at brprinters.com who can help you process orders. o Books from BR Printers range from $2.60 to $5.05 per book depending on the size. Only 2-Day Shipping is available for the BR Printers books and shipping costs, on average, add about an additional $0.75/book for orders more than 100 books. * Due to changes on the CK-12 system the 2018-19 books have not yet been uploaded to the ck12.org website. If we cannot find a solution to the problem we may not be uploading them to CK-12 this year.
