Breathe Utah

At this time of the year we are reminded of the poor air quality we routinely breathe in the valleys of Utah. Breathe Utah is a nonprofit group dedicated to providing every Utah student with basic information about air pollution, how individual actions can make a difference in addressing this problem, and how students can protect themselves.

Your school/organization has the opportunity to invite Breathe Utah to come during the 2016-2017 school year for grade K-12 large and small group presentations or middle school classroom visits (including Earth Science). Currently our reach is Cache, Utah and Salt Lake County for these presentations. The classroom lessons have been developed by experienced educators and are being developed, piloted and tested to provide high quality STEM curriculum for middle school students. The new curriculum will be available to teachers through Breathe/PLT workshops and at the Utah Science Teachers Association conference on Feb. 10, 2017.

Breathe Utah's is excited to announce Dawn Monson as our Education Coordinator. Feel free to email her with specific questions. If you would like to schedule a classroom visit or assembly please click on this link<https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScAcYrn9ADZVSTjfaY3v7OeDIUhFImVxOV7XAdIvQtI2rbDVA/viewform>.

For updates on Breathe Utah's Education Program and to receive the latest information on transportation, legislation and other efforts to clear the air in Northern Utah, sign up for our newsletter by joining Breathe Utah at http://www.breatheutah.org/join. Breathe Utah's material is developed in collaboration with Utah Clean Cities "Idle Free", Utah Asthma Program, Utah Society for Environmental Education, and UCAIR.

For Elementary-Level Science Teachers: Arbordale Publishing has a STEAM-based picture book coming out in February about hoodoos and the Paiute legend of how they formed. Non-fictional back matter explains the geologic process that forms the hoodoos. The geology information was vetted for accuracy by Dr. Larry E. Davis, Education Outreach/Geologist at Bryce Canyon National and we worked closely with Glenn Rogers and Clarence John of the Shivwits Band of the Paiute Indian Tribe of Utah to verify the information regarding Paiute culture and history. If you would like to receive a Digital Review Copy (DRC) of this book, please e-mail Donna German at donna at arbordalepublishing.com<mailto:donna at arbordalepublishing.com>. Offer good until January 2, 2017. Once downloaded, the DRC is available on your computer or device for 60 days, at which time it turns into a pumpkin and disappears.

Hoodoo Picture eBook Available
Arbordale just uploaded the soon-to-be-released hoodoo picture book into their Fun eReader(r) enhanced ebook format and is providing a link for Utah teachers and media specialists to preview. The Spanish text is still being checked and the Spanish audio won't be done until that checking is complete--it's a work in progress! But it will all be working by the time the book actually releases in February and allows you to see the book in its English format now.

The link to the ebook (under the cover image) will work until the end of January at which time it turns into a pumpkin and disappears. Because this link is not tied to your specific email address, you are welcome to forward this email to other teachers and media specialists so they can preview it too. Thanks.

    Read ebook<http://www.arbordalepublishing.com/viewebook.php?e=9781628559620&s=JTD1UK>

The book will be available in February, 2017 in English hardcover and paperback; Spanish paperback; downloadable ebooks in both languages; and in Arbordale's dual-language Fun eReader(r)<http://www.arbordalepublishing.com/eBookSiteLicense.php> enhanced ebook format with audio, word highlighting and speed control for beginning or struggling readers and ELL/Dual-language learners.

The geology information in this book was vetted for accuracy prior to publication by Dr. Larry E. Davis, Education Outreach/Geologist at Bryce Canyon National Park. In addition, we worked with elders Glenn Rogers and Clarence John of the Shivwits Band of the Paiute Indian Tribe of Utah to ensure cultural accuracy and respect. They are 100% onboard with this book.

In addition to the For Creative Minds section, each book also free online educational resources<https://www.arbordalepublishing.com/Resources.php> including 25-40 pages of cross-curricular activities, reading levels, comprehension quizzes, and alignment to standards. The resources for this book are still being gathered but will be live by the time the book releases in February.
