Science Teachers and Leaders,

We are looking for teachers who are familiar with the Utah Science Open Educational Resource (OER) Textbooks that are willing to take a day away from their students to work on revising the books for the 2017-18 school year.

Monday, February 27, 2017
10:00 AM - 3:00 PM
Location - Thanksgiving Point - Museum of Ancient Life - Amber Room

Substitute reimbursement is available for all participating educators. Lodging is available for teachers traveling 50+ miles (one way) to the workshop. Travel reimbursement is available for teachers traveling 25+ miles (one way) to the workshop. Due to new USBE policies, lunch will not be provided for this meeting so you will be given time to purchase food or eat food that you bring from home.

Overview - The science education community in partnership with Dr. David Wiley from Brigham Young University and funding from a Hewlett Foundation grant embarked on a statewide scaling for open education resource development for science grades 3-12. Building upon previous collaborations with educators in Nebo School district reaching back to 2009, the project reached out to engage educators from across the state on teams to build state textbooks for secondary science courses in 2012 and elementary science courses in 2013. Twenty three districts and 7 charter schools had teacher representation in the writing groups that pulled together the textbook from open education resources such as CK12.org and Siyavula's Thunderbolt Kids. The final textbooks are available on the CK-12 website for free digital download or for purchase in print at the cost.

The project continues today with supported implementation efforts for teachers, along with a commitment to continue to update the materials each year using community feedback and data. This will be a continual process that provides a sustainable and cost effective solution to supporting student reference materials that are adaptable to changes in the Utah standards and science content knowledge.

Purpose - At this workshop, educators will be reviewing the current OER materials to make updates based on community feedback and increasing student engagement. Educators involved do NOT need to be current implementers of the OER, but should be familiar with the resource design and content. Educators should be confident in their writing skills and the standards for their grade level or content area.

Note - With minimal changes necessary to these textbooks we are looking for only about 4-5 of participants this year for each book. Also, the OER books for the new 6th-8th Grade SEEd standards were revised earlier in the year to make them available to teachers sooner and will not be revised during this workshop.
