MSSST Physics Cohort Program

Hi Folks-

We are starting a new MSSST Physics cohort program this summer and would appreciate your help spreading the word. Most of you are familiar with the MSSST program and know that the teachers have felt it to have contributed greatly to their professional development.

This program is better suited toward teachers that do NOT already have a Physics endorsement as there will be some foundational course work that is required. Teachers that successfully complete the program (and have the prerequisites of Chem I and II) will receive an MS in Physics (Teaching), a Physics Endorsement, and a Physical Science Endorsement. The final project is based on a faculty mentored summer research experience in the field or in a lab.

I've attached a flier with more information or interested parties can go to http://csme.utah.edu/mssst/.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Cheers, Holly

Come interact with different companies that have technology and science at their core and see if it's right for you! Many companies will be there with fun interactive products to play with and learn from. SheTech Explorer Day is a conference for high school girls 9th through 12th grade. This day-long event will include hands-on activities in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). Our ultimate goal is to expose girls to technology in a fun atmosphere to give girls the opportunity to meet STEM role models and learn more about exciting opportunities in those fields.
Key Points:

* Registration closes February 26th. Hurry to register as space is limited. Reserved spaces for school districts are released Feb 12th. Workshops are first come, first serve and popular workshops are filling up fast so register now!

* The event is March 11th from 8:00am (registration) to 3:30pm at the UCCU Event Center.

*         And remember, it's FREE!
Register and find more information at www.shetechexplorer.com<http://www.shetechexplorer.com>.

2016 Modeling Workshops

Dear science education community leaders,

The 2016 Modeling workshops are listed on the AMTA website (and attached to the email). I hope you will share this with your teachers. At this moment, no workshops have been scheduled for your state.

Website:  http://modelinginstruction.org/workshops-2016
Workshop descriptions, dates, details: http://www.phystec.org/pd/?set=Modeling

Modeling Workshops thoroughly address most aspects of science teaching, including integration of teaching methods with course content. Workshops incorporate up-to-date results of science education research, best curriculum materials, use of technology, and experience in collaborative learning and guidance. Workshops focus on all 8 science practices and cross-cutting concepts of the NRCFramework for K-12 Science Education, the basis of the NGSS.

Modeling Workshops are peer-led. Content is reorganized around basic models to increase its structural coherence. Participants are supplied with a complete set of course materials and work through activities alternately in roles of student or teacher, as they practice techniques of guided inquiry and cooperative learning.

Each MODELING WORKSHOP has these features:

  * aligned with National Science Education Standards
  * focuses on all 8 scientific practices of NRC Framework for K-12 Science Education.
  *   addresses multiple learning styles.
  *   addresses student naive conceptions.
  * collaboration, creativity, communication, and critical thinking.
  *   systems, models, modeling.
  * coherent curriculum framework, but not a curriculum; thus flexible.
  * compatible with Socratic methods, project-based instruction, Cambridge curriculum, PBL, etc.
  *   science & math literacy.
  *   authentic assessments.
  *   high-tech and low-tech options for labs.
Models and theories are the purpose and the outcomes of scientific practices. They are tools for engineering design and problem solving. Thus, modeling guides all other practices.
