[Science] Summer Utah Science Teacher Reminders

As the school year begins to draw to a close for many of our school, students, and teachers, I just wanted to take a moment to thank you from the Utah State Office of Education for your time, passion, and dedication to teaching Utah students science this academic year.

A couple of last reminders about summer opportunities:

1. ALL Science Teachers - Healthy STEM 5K this Saturday, June 1st
2. Elementary Science Teachers - Core Academy for Elementary Science Grades 3rd - 6th
3. Secondary Science Teachers - Summer Endorsement Course Opportunities

1. ALL Science Teachers - Healthy STEM 5K this Saturday, June 1st -
The Utah State Office of Education is hosting the first annual Healthy STEM 5K and STEM Fair on Saturday, June 1, 2013 at 8 AM at the Salt Lake Center for Science Education in Salt Lake City, UT.  This event combines exercise for the body and mind and is intended for educators, PreK-12 students, pre-service educators, administrators, and community members.  The event will be sponsored by SelectHealth.

The 5K finish line will be at the STEM Fair featuring Utah’s STEM community organizations presenting their best projects and resources for teachers.  The fair will also have hands-on activities for children and students.  If you know of an organization that would be interested in participating in the STEM Fair, please have them contact USOE’s Science Specialist, Sarah Young (sarah.young at schools.utah.gov<mailto:sarah.young at schools.utah.gov>).

So far the following organizations are participating in the STEM Fair:

·         Discovery Gateway

·         Clark Planetarium

·         The Living Planet Aquarium

The registration fee for the 5K is $5.00 for an adult and this includes one free registration for a PreK-12 student. To register go to: http://healthystem.eventbrite.com/

All proceeds go to support Utah’s MESA National Competition Team.

2. Elementary Science Teachers - Core Academy for Elementary Science Grades 3rd - 6th
Here is sign-up information - To register for the Core Academy, complete the following:

1)      Go to http://usoe.truenorthlogic.com/

2)      Login to OnTrack:

Username: firstname.lastname

Password: CACTUS ID Number (What is my CACTUS ID Number?<https://www.uen.org/cactus/logon.do>)

3)      On the OnTrack homepage (after you have logged in), select the Yellow tab, Professional Learning

4)      To register for any of the Core Academy courses, search the course title Core Academy

5)      When the search results return, select the blue course title for the course you want to attend

6)      On the next screen, select the Register button next to the section/date that you would like to attend

7)      On the next screen select the Next button which will complete the registration process

8)      You will receive a registration email to the email address that you have listed in OnTrack.

How do I change my email address in OnTrack? At the top of the page there is a Sign Out button and also a My Profile button. Click the My Profile button and then the Edit button on the next page. You may change or update your password, e-mail address, demographics, and locations from this page.

Please make sure your contact information, especially your email address, is correct before you exit OnTrack. You will receive a confirmation email from OnTrack after you register. You may also receive information from your session facilitators.

3. Secondary Science Teachers - Summer Endorsement Course Opportunities

7.       University of Utah iUTAH Summer Courses (you can take 2 of the 3 for One Earth Science Endorsement Credit)
8. Utah State University Master Naturalist Courses – Endorsement Credit for Ecology Requirement
9. Meteorology with University of Utah
Please note that for all of the courses that can count toward endorsement credit, you MUST select to have the course documented on a transcript and pay any associated documentation fees.  You can then submit that transcript with your secondary science endorsement application.  If it is not documented on a transcript you will not be able to use the course to meet an endorsement requirement.
