[NASAFACS] New CTAE/FACS Teacher Conference Ideas

Hi Linsey,

We try not to replicate what the school districts are doing with lesson planning and classroom management. In NC, LEAs are required to provide a Beginning Teacher Support Program. Our CTE New Teacher Induction Program orients teachers (mostly those who come from industry- who are typically required to participate- but all new teachers are encouraged to attend) to Career and Technical Education and the unique aspects of teaching and leading a CTE program.

We use a blended instruction model and partner with East Carolina University's Office of Professional and Continuing Studies. There are three modules- Curriculum and Instruction; Resources, Support, and Work-based Learning; and The CTSO Experience. The first two require successful completion of online content before being approved to attend the Face-to-Face day. The CTSO Experience takes place at the program area's CTSO state conference- for FCS it is obviously FCCLA. Then they submit a reflection assignment after the conference. ECU manages the grading and logistics in collaboration with NCDPI.

Hi Linsey,

We have a one-day training in Montana, and we just revamped ours with a new format.  It's for all New CTE Professionals (all areas) within years 0 to 5.  We are encouraging them to attend more than once as needed each year.   We have decided to merge all content areas for most of the day this year to allow for more cross-curricular networking rather than mostly dividing them in previous years.  I have attached our agenda.

Most of our CTSOs have a fall leadership training of some sort, and many of the chapter advisers receive intense training at that time.

I don't have any data on retention unfortunately on our more non-traditional teaching routes.  Those that get connected personally or with mentors seem to stick it out in Montana as they have such a high learning curve.

Hello All,

In Georgia, we offer a two day conference and a follow up workshop for the new CTE teachers (0-3 years).  This has now become my project.  The format and subjects have been the same for the past couple of years and I'm looking to revamp it.  I want to ensure I'm providing the materials the teachers need.  Like most of you, we have three tiers of teachers: 1. those that went to school to teach, 2. those that came from industry 3. Those that graduated college then ended up teaching.

Do any of you have the same type of training in your state?  What all do you provide?  It can be FACS and/or CTE specific.

Do any of you have any information regarding retention of teachers in your state?  How can we keep them?

Lastly, I'm in search of topics that all of the tiers can benefit from.  We currently have the basics: classroom management, project based learning, lesson planning, CTSO training, differentiated instruction, EOPAs, assessment, and our teacher evaluation system.  What topics are we missing?
