Please note Leslie wants to ensure we understood the request for Science Common Core reviewers included FCS Educators with strong science connections. In fact, this could be a very good way to promote our science connection. See Leslies note below:

"We would love to have FACS teachers who offer strong science connections and have programs that offer science credit to serve on this committee to represent us and our connections to science standards and STEM."

Refer to the e-mail history below for additional information. Gayla

Subject: Fwd: ACTE request for help: Common Core science standards

Hi, Gayla-

I received this email from Stephen DeWitt asking for help from us for the Common Core Science Standards. I think that NASAFACS members might be actually the ones that can help us locate ACTE members who could assist with this. Could you send out to all members? or place on the List Serve? I still can't get connected to the List Serve.

Please let me know what you think so I can respond back to Steve at ACTE. Thanks for your help with this!

ACTE Board of Directors:

I am writing to seek your help in identifying ACTE members who will review Common Core science standards that are being developed. This is a great opportunity to influence the science standards in development but will require quick turnaround.

ACTE was contacted by the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) yesterday regarding this opportunity. PARCC has asked ACTE to be a primary reviewer in the Next Generation Science Standards and ACTE is working quickly to develop a task force of individuals for this purpose. We are writing to seek your suggestion of individuals for this purpose. Please send names and contact information to me as soon as possible - We only have about four weeks for this entire process - a very quick turnaround.

Following is more information from PARCC about this opportunity. Thank you!...

The development of the standards is a two-step process in which the National Research Council (NRC), Achieve, Inc. (which manages PARCC), the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and the National Science Teachers Association are working with states and science educators to develop. These are intended to be rigorous and internationally-benchmarked K-12 science education standards ready for state adoption. As part of this process, Achieve is looking for experts in many different fields to review confidential drafts of the standards during development.

The National Research Council managed the first step of the process by constructing the Framework for K-12 Science Education<http://www7.nationalacademies.org/bose/Standards_Framework_Homepage.html>, which will guide the second step of the process: the development of Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS)-led by states and managed by Achieve. The Framework and Standards will focus on essential core concepts and integrate these concepts with science and engineering practices so students develop deep understanding of science as a discipline. Both of these documents will reflect high expectations for all students and take into consideration the knowledge and skills required for science literacy and college and career readiness, based on current research and on professional judgment. For more details on the development process, please see the NGSS website at www.nextgenscience.org<http://www.nextgenscience.org>.
In April, Achieve will seek confidential online reviews from scientists, science educators and other key individuals before releasing the first draft for public commentary. We would love to get a group review from ACTE, along with working with you to spread the word to your membership about the public review period. We will provide you guiding questions along with the draft standards to allow you to respond efficiently and comment in depth on areas of special interest or expertise, even outside of science (such as connections to mathematics or technology). It is crucial to have reviewers from diverse areas of expertise to help ensure the effectiveness of the new standards. Your group will have about four weeks to complete the review of this first draft.

Please let us know of your willingness to review these standards by signing the attached confidentiality agreement and returning it to Molly Ewing at mewing at achieve.org<mailto:mewing at achieve.org> or by fax at (202) 828-0911. Each individual within ACTE who will have access to the confidential information needs to return their own confidentiality agreement. Please indicate on the form if you do not wish us to list your organization/university on our website as providing a reviewer.

We greatly appreciate your support of this groundbreaking effort that is so important to the future of American students.
