Hi Teresa,
In Utah we created family and consumer sciences common core curriculum grids that map the standards and objectives for each of our FCS courses that have a state skills certification test with the math, language arts and science core curriculums. This might help you as you start the process of looking at your FCS courses for the math. Here is the link to all our curriculum common core grids at our state website: http://www.schools.utah.gov/cte/facs_grids.html

In addition, at our FCS UEN site we have placed and will continue to place Math embedded lesson plans our teachers have created in the different FCS subject areas. A calculator icon identifies our math embedded lesson plans at our UEN FCS site. Here is a sample of one of those lesson plans on button holes and math. http://www.uen.org/Lessonplan/preview?LPid=28654

In Utah we are not doing a math endorsement for a FCS course. Business does receive math credit for their accounting course and health science has a medical math course. Here is the link to the medical math course. http://www.schools.utah.gov/cte/documents/hs/standards/MedicalMath.pdf

Subject: [NASAFACS] Math credits in FCS courses

Hello -

Idaho FCS is currently with the Dept of Education to create a math endorsement for current FCS and Business Education instructors. The courses being piloted in this project are the FCS and BUS Personal Finance course.

Here are my questions:

1. Does your state currently have some type of CTE Math endorsement for your instructors?

2. Are there any CTE, especially FCS and BUS, courses that are taught for math credits?

Our goal is to identify the math competencies in the courses listed above, align with the State Common Core Standards, and define the endorsement requirements for our instructors to teach their courses for math credits.

As always, we all have the same goals and it is nice to hear what other states are doing. Thank you so much for sharing.

I will be meeting with the certification director on March 21st so any information or links you can share with me would be wonderful.
