Penn State offers unprecedented transparency

Silence is not Golden

Organizational costs

The painful lessons from Penn State guide us on the cost of
organizational silence. So often, someone knows about
discrimination, harassment or bullying. Incivility and unethical
behavior costs organizations millions of dollars in lost revenues,
jeopardized public relations, and the distracted productivity of
remaining staff. Studies show the average cost to defend a law suit
is close to $95,000 to summary judgment. A full defense can cost
$250,000. Imagine the savings in time, grief and resources if only
someone can speak up.

Some strategies to uncover problems.

1).Create exit interviews for staff. Staff who are leaving are in a
stronger position to alert an organization of problems.

2).Have strong policies regarding disclosure- AND follow them.
Organizational culture can go a long way to encouraging staff to come
forward with problems.

3). Change does come from the top. Management and leadership set the
tone for the organizational culture. If executive leadership creates
an environment that creates authentic discussion, issues can be
quelled before blossoming to lawsuits.

While this message is not meant to indict or offer opinion of guilt
or innocence on any party, it is intended to send a message about
open communication. I have to respect the recent unprecedented
transparency that Penn State appears to make as it continues with the
struggles facing its campus this year. In their transparency are
lessons learned about the true cost of silence.

Recent reports show over $3.2 million spent in legal defense of the
university. $2.4 million has already been spent on internal
investigations. Over the past weeks, a number of law suits have been
filed against the university, already costing close to half a million

While dollars and cents are objective and quantifiable, the human
cost is beyond a price tag. First and foremost, the cost to alleged
victims and their families is beyond calculation. Students, staff,
fans and the players, all have paid a hefty price in the wake of this

In retrospect, many Penn State officials have wished they had done
more, reported more or acted more. Their wishes can guide future
actions for other organizations. Silence is not golden. All staff
should strive to create an environment of inclusion and access where
all voices are heard, regardless of who speaks them.
