<div dir="ltr"><span style="font-size:11pt;line-height:107%;font-family:calibri,sans-serif">Those were interesting articles.  The one from the Washington Post actually says that more journalist are now identifying as independents (from the graphic and the survey
 from 2013).  So if we are to take from these articles that more liberals mean more bias in reporting; then more independents should result in more balanced reporting.  Maybe we need to watch with an open mind and see if the media themselves are trying to adjust
 their own bias.  We all have our own cognitive biases, so trying to objectively look at anything is something even adults struggle with.  With that being said, I think we just need to teach CRAAP ˇV that is it.  I make it very clear to my students that I donˇ¦t
 care what side they fall in on any given topic ˇV just that they find sources that meet the CRAAP Checklist.   That they get good sources based on facts from people with some expertise on the subject, not misinformation designed to persuade them to one ideology
 or another.  In my opinion, CNN meets the criteria.  They quote people with authority, cite sources, and check their facts.  For me, mainstream media bias comes more from a desire to get ratings than promote specific ideologies--but that might be my own cognitive
 bias at play.  My worry is if we equate CNN and other mainstream media sites with some of the really horrendous sites out there that have no journalistic standards in place, that willfully dispense misinformation with no sources cited or evidence given , then
 we are doing a disservice to students.  Most students see things in black and white, and it would have to be made very clear that CNN, despite its biases, is still a million times better than say the Martin Luther King site (<a href="https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__martinlutherking.org&d=DgMFaQ&c=fGrSkuu3YyS91PacIZP0XfO0GRH7JgL5znLEO6-CQG0&r=07fWuDkbF8chZFh8GeGvG5riBQMgIEorx6Mpqt8ok8g&m=5h1e6gVhLJUK4JwUqEt6Sjkw4Sc1bBQ8wFCc3hK5bwc&s=QGFXbewciTO3gUJ3p1LBEEmJj4eaQ99bl9AdQQRWEuA&e=" target="_blank">martinlutherking.org</a>)

<p>I'm not afraid, and of course my administration knows that CNN is a reliable news source. I was not the one who showed the clip, it was shown as part of the 6th grade curriculum. </p>

<p>My concern is that we are now at a time when people are choosing the facts they wish to believe and dismissing valid journalism at too partisan. I do think it is imperative that we teach the danger of siloizing our information. But I'm not sure at which
 grade these concepts are cognitively appropriate.  I begin teaching the CRAAP test and reliable sources in fourth grade. This past election is ripe with examples of false information but I'm wondering if using it would feel like an "attack" from the "teacher's

One thing that I do is a short exercise to talk about how facts are manipulated in order to express opinions and how opinions can be valid if they are supported with facts.  I am lucky enough to get to talk to my students all three years that they are at SOJO,
 so I hope that one of the times the lesson sinks in.<br>
<br>
</div>
When it comes to "lighting up the switchboard", I have tried to become unafraid of teaching hard concepts (or buying books that may ruffle feathers).  Maybe I am lucky enough to be in a supportive building, but I have really tried to remember that if I am teaching
 the truth, if I am following the curriculum, and following policy, that I shouldn't be afraid should complaints come.  I don't try to be purposefully provocative - I just mean that if I am doing nothing wrong, then I should not be afraid for my job. I hope
 (HOPE) that your administrator understands that CNN is a legit source of information and wouldn't threaten to fire you if you do use it again and again.

<p>So here is what I've been struggling with in relation to this election and our position as the champion of seeking valid sources. How do we go about addressing the the unfathomable amount of misinformation that was put forth as fact and news on social media?
 How do we help this next generation understand what it means to source information? How do we do without being partisan? As part of 6th grade curriculum our classes viewed a news clip, and a parent wrote in outraged that her daughter was shown something from
 the Clinton News Network (CNN) and blamed the teacher's union for promoting the "liberal" media. When we can't point to legitimate journalism as a valid source how do we teach our students about sorting fact from biased memes? When the person who is to head
 our country blames the coverage, not his actions, every time he gets bad press. How do we talk about "what a valid source is?" We need lesson plans that can do this without igniting our school's switchboards. </p>
