[Library Media] Search Stations in Libraries

We have a couple ipads that are mounted and secured to the counter. The ipads run in a kiosk mode, which locks them on the library catalog app. We were running into similar problems in years past, and the ipads have been a great solution.

I have a couple of designated OPAC computers. They are logged in using a guest password through Active Directory and are locked down from other uses. They are older computers but not much is needed on them for OPAC access.

We use chrome boxes in our district. They are in kiosk mode and the students should not be able to access other sites. It makes it accessible for students to search for books in the library.

Hello Library Friends,

With changes in how our students connect online, our district has run into the issue of not being able to have open access to the library catalog, i.e., search stations in the library. Students can log in to a computer, as themselves, and go to Destiny to search, but they don't. Instead of learning the skill of how to find a book, they simply ask the library clerk. When classes are in the library, this becomes difficult.

What are other districts doing? Do you have a designated "search station" open? Are you using devices that can be locked to just the OPAC? Are you looking up books for students?

Please let me know what your school/district does.

Thank you!
