[Library Media] Start Over Again -- Every Year

I was frustrated by not being thought of as a teacher by our PTSA, so I
wrote the following clarification. It's a little long and it felt like I
was fishing for compliments, but we do need to educate people about our
role.
Sydna

Every now and again, I have the feeling that the PTSA doesn't quite know
what to do with me. Am I a teacher? Am I staff? I love our PTSA. I am a
former middle school PTSA president, and I know how hard they work for our
school. They are wonderful.

But I think there is confusion because most people don't understand the
difference between an elementary library aide and a secondary library
teacher. Most active PTSA volunteers come from an elementary background,
and the elementary library aides in Jordan district are 17-hour aides that
may or may not have a degree. They do not purchase or process books (that
is done by fully certified librarians at the district level). If they
teach, they use lessons prepared by the district. There are great
elementary library aides, but they don't have the full responsibilities of
secondary librarians.

Secondary library teachers MUST have a teaching degree. (Some secondary
librarians come from a public library background, but they must take
classes to certify as a teacher.) A person with a degree in education needs
an additional endorsement to be a secondary library teacher. This
endorsement takes about 2 years to complete and is comprised of master
level classes. Most secondary library teachers have master's degrees in
education and/or library science. All secondary library teachers are in
charge of their own budgets, purchase and process books, create lessons,
teach, and run their own library programs.

I just thought it would be helpful to clarify this at the start of the
year, since I have sensed some confusion in the past. Not that I need the
stuff the PTSA hands out (It is great stuff, and they make sure to include
staff, so no complaints), but I worked hard to become a teacher, and I
thought the differences should be known.
