[Library Media] book purchases

Regarding the EBSCO situation, it's pretty clearly a censorship attempt.

Hope to see a lot of you at the UEN board meeting on Friday.

For professional review sources, Booklist, Horn Book Magazine, Kirkus Reviews and Publisher’s Weekly are all available in EBSCO, which despite UEN censorship (yes, I’m going there) is still available via the Utah State Library (https://onlinelibrary.utah.gov/) and hopefully your local public library’s website.
Something like this “Starred Reviews” spreadsheet is a good hack to find great books if you don’t have the funds to subscribe to professional journals or the time to pore through them all: https://booksheets.wordpress.com/starred-reviews/. Then you can look up the interesting titles on NoveList (again, thanks Utah State library: https://onlinelibrary.utah.gov/research/databases/novelist.html) or possibly a library vendor web site to see the actual reviews.

You might want to invest in one of the reviewing journals. “Invest” is used purposely because using these tools is an investment in a stronger collection.

In the past, it was recommended that a journal like School Library Journal be purchased for its reviews from experienced teacher librarians, along with a subscription to a professional reviewing journal, e.g., Booklist or Booklinks.  This balance between opinions from people working daily with students and from those who see the entire gamut of books for young people and review for a living, is beneficial. In these days, rather than purchasing two reviewing journals, it might be possible to pair with another school and share. At the very least, these resources should be available from the district office.

They both represent a wide variety of publishers.  They can bring their collection out to your school for you to look through - like a short book preview, but with many more books.  It definitely helps to get a feel for the look and size of a series.
I agree about the books being too short!  I find pretty good sized ones through Lerner - their Twenty First Century imprint is well sized.  The than that, the other non-fiction publishers are hit and miss.
Maybe we should take a survey and send out the results to the non-fiction publishers to express our dissatisfaction!

What are your thoughts on the various book providers out there? I am trying to update our collection but teachers are too busy and don't have the time to offer any suggestions. So it is up to me to find books. I've looked through many preview boxes and have found many titles and subjects that would be great for our library. But I'm not impressed with the meager content and price. Paying at least $25.00 for a book that is maybe 50 pages with 3/4 of those pages covered with photos is not a good way to spend my limited budget. What are your thoughts and suggestions? My focus is on updating our nonfiction section.
