Victory for School Libraries in Washington!
In what was a decision that rocked the school library world in the state of
Washington last May, the Washington State Professional Educators Standards
Board voted to eliminate the requirement of taking *any coursework at all*
for becoming a school librarian. By eliminating Pathway 3, teachers had
only to pass a Washington state-written library test to be a certified
school librarian.

The outcry was heard across the nation. Presidents of the American Library
Association and American Association of School Librarians wrote letters of
protest

as did dozens of educators in Washington.

In Spokane this morning, the standards board heard additional testimony and
with little discussion voted almost unanimously (one nay) to reinstate
Pathway 3, requiring completion of a library certification program to be
certified.
*The vote this morning was a victory for ALL school libraries!*
