FYI a district in Colorado worked through this same issue with the same book last month, and ultimately didn’t remove it: http://www.gjsentinel.com/news/articles/district-official-ordered-book-removed

Subject: Re: [Library Media] Thirteen Reasons Why

Thirteen Reasons Why has been wildly popular at SHS since it came out. I Book talk it to every Sophomore class, every year. I taught it in Cornerstone for years also. I think every kid and their parents should read it because it's importance comes from it's introspective nature. It's more about looking at ourselves and our overt or covert treatment of others, than it is about suicide. When approached about the book by principal, I reminded him that the book and the video are two separate genre and should be treated as such, and unless the complainers have read it, they have no voice.

I think it is certainly premature to start removing it from collections because the hype over the series will most likely be gone by August when we return to school. This is a book that should be available on our shelves. The students I've spoken with about the book and the series preferred the book over the series. Now how nice is that?

Hi All!
I’m meeting with my principal later today and wanted to hear some of your thoughts/opinions on the book Thirteen Reasons Why. Our superintendent, along with many others I’m sure, has asked that we consider taking the book off the shelf because of all the issues that have surrounded it since the series on Netflix came out. What are your thoughts? Is this a book that needs to be taken out of schools?
I would love to hear your thoughts on this! Thanks so much and have a great day!!
