Job Title:Library Director

Performs a variety of professional and administrative duties in planning, implementing and directing public library services.
Works under the broad policy guidance and direction from the Library Board. Operates under the fiscal supervision of the City Administrator. Provides general guidance and direction to Assistant Librarian(s), clerks, and volunteer workers.
Supervises department personnel; hires and trains employees; assigns and monitors work; evaluates performance; disciplines employees as necessary; recruits and trains volunteers; monitors volunteer effectiveness.
Administers board policies; makes policy recommendations to board; provides staff support and information to board; evaluates library services and makes recommendations for improvements.
Assists Finance Director in preparing budget and submits it to Library Board for approval; monitors and approves expenditures as directed by the Library Board; administers gifts and federal monies; administers the receipt of money collected for fines, fees, copies, interlibrary loans, etc.
Manages acquisitions and collection development; directs the selection of all books and other materials selected for purchase; directs and performs the cataloging of the library collection; evaluates collection for weeding, discard, delete and obsolete material; orders and processes new materials.
Coordinates public relations and publicity for library services and programs; works with elected officials, school officials, civic organizations and State Library staff to develop programs and resolve problems; makes presentations to civic groups; schedules and conducts library tours and instructional classes.
Develops specialty programs for children, young adult and adult readers; schedules, publicizes and promotes activities targeting specific patron groups and interests; provides book delivery service to homebound patrons; manages inter-library loan processes and requests.
Develops and implements fundraising strategies; prepares grant applications; develops programs targeting the collection of donations and other philanthropic contributions for the maintenance and expansion of library services.
Manages library computer system to ensure timely processing of reports and related management documents; oversees network operations and assures proper function of system peripherals, i.e., printers, monitors, scanners, etc.; manages the input of circulation data; trains staff in use of computer system.
Directs and performs complete circulation duties; checks books and materials in and out, assures proper sensitizing or desensitizing of coded information; verifies proper bar-codes, checks for damaged materials; operates computer to enter and update patron records; identifies patron status in relation to obligations, i.e., fines, and communicates the same to patrons; follows Library established guidelines in allowing waiver of fines; issues library cards; operates computer to delete items from the collections.
Performs more complex public service functions related to reference; receives and responds to detailed reference questions; utilizes all reference avenues of the library in searching and locating information andselection materials; recommends materials to patrons; initiates actions such as placing holds, calling on loans, etc.; provide simple training to patrons in use of computer to locate collection materials via internet, library searches, etc.
Attends various local and regional meetings; participates in workshops; participates in library conferences, locally and nationally.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
