Hello,

I wanted to share a few updates from the Utah Education Network. We hope you will pass the information onto your colleagues.

1) Earlier this month the Utah State Board of Education approved the Secondary Library Media Standards (grades 6-12). We updated UEN's core database so you can find the new standards here:

http://www.uen.org/core/core.do?courseNum=6512

This course is broken into 3 strands:

Strand I Literacy: Reading Engagement
Strand II Literacy: Information and Research
Strand III Literacy: Media Engagement

The Elementary Library Media Standards are currently under revision and you can view a draft here:
http://www.schools.utah.gov/CURR/library/Core/K5.aspx

Christelle Estrada is the USOE Secondary Library Media Specialist.
Jennifer Throndsen is the USOE Elementary Library Media Specialist.

Karen’s Komment: These standards are not just for Library Media Specialists. All educators, regardless of their role in the school, should be weaving these skills into their activities where appropriate.

2) In response from feedback from Librarians and Specialists around the state, UEN is going to break the Gale products into two collections. This means that soon you will see two Gale buttons on pioneer.uen.org<http://pioneer.uen.org>.

Gale Reference Collection - Grades K-6
Gale Reference Collection - Grades 7-12

This will help school librarians, educators and parents direct students to the appropriate Gale resources. And it will alleviate the frustration students may encounter when having to work with text above or below their reading level.

Gale Reference Collection - Grades K-6
- Discovering Collection
- InfoTrac Junior Edition
- Kids InfoBits
- Student Resource Center – Junior

Gale Reference Collection - Grades 7-12
- Biography in Context
- Gale Virtual Reference Library
- Global Issues in Context
- InfoTrac Newsstand
- InfoTrac Student Edition
- Opposing Viewpoints in Context
- Science in Context
- Student Resources in Context

Please let me know if you have questions about this change.

3) Gale will be holding another webinar today at 3:30 p.m. The focus will be on Gale In Context: Science & Global Issues.

You can find a link to the webinar on UEN’s Professional Development page: http://www.uen.org/development/

The links will also take you to the recordings of the past Gale webinars.

4) While we are in the process of editing pioneer.uen.org<http://pioneer.uen.org> we are going to add a link to National Archives <http://www.archives.gov> under the "Additional Library Resources" column.
