If your library is interested in holding a special event, program or
activities to honor American Indian Heritage Month, consider applying for
one of the State Library's Indigenous Month mini grants and tapping into
the activities planned by our sister agency, the Utah Division of Indian

*Overview:*
The State Library joins forces with the Utah Division of Indian Affairs to
offer 15 mini grants of up to $1,000 to help public libraries, school
libraries, and tribal libraries enhance their educational activities
associated with American Indian Heritage Month during the month of November
2014 by holding educational events or activities that honor our American
Indian heritage.

*Eligible Libraries:*
The Indigenous Month Mini Grant is open to all public libraries, school
libraries and tribal libraries in the State of Utah. School libraries
within the same district are encouraged to apply individually. Likewise,
branch libraries within the same system are encouraged to apply
individually.

*The desired results (outcomes) for an Indigenous Month Mini Grant Project
include:*

   - Honor the creativity, courage, inventiveness, and wisdom of indigenous
   people through the use of culturally authentic storytelling, writing,
   singing and dancing.
   - Nurture literacy development in culturally competent ways that connect
   families to their American Indian heritage.
   - Recognize and respect culture, traditions, and language as powerful
   tools for strengthening families and communities.
   - Establish collaborative efforts with schools, libraries, or community
   organizations to provide culturally appropriate services.


*A successful mini grant application will clearly:*

   - Outline the event or activities planned AND highlight how the event or
   activities will achieve one or more of the desired results noted above.
   - Identify at least one strategic community partnership AND highlight
   how the partnership will help achieve the desired results.
   - Estimate of how much in local funds will be used for this project
   (also known as “local match”).


*Grant Awards – Allowable Use of Funds:*

   - Advertising
   - Expenses to bring an author, poet, educator, trainer, or presenter
   - Educational material
   - Supplies, printing, postage
   - Food or refreshments are not allowable expenses
