[Library Media] Library Girl

Continuing with what Marianne said, sometimes it is hard, especially if you go new into a school who has had a librarian that perhaps wasn't promoting the library. It all takes hard work, one step at a time, but things do happen when start doing little things that make a difference. It doesn't happen all at once, but you see progress every year!

This is the part of Library Girl's article that spoke to me, "The bottom line is, if your principal doesn't know what you do, it is because no one has showed them. Which begs the question: what are waiting for? I want to stop having conversations in which we lament the ignorance of our administrators because the fact is that no one is going to swoop in and give your principal a primer on everything you do. That is your job. Only you can change their perception. It's time to quit talking about it and just do it."

I firmly believe that what she says is true. It is only by doing that we change perceptions. Sometimes it is hard, but it is worth the effort!

Here's a spitfire article from a passionate librarian. You probably have favorite library blogs as well, but library girl - the real person - is one of my favorite contributors to LinkedIn. The article really hits too close to home for me; I just need to move on past some of my go-to topics of library conversation. http://www.librarygirl.net/2013/12/five-more-conversations-about-school.html

I love the superwoman graphic as well. I can just visualize a superman or superwoman librarian jumping in to save the day. I like to think Friday night I was superwoman librarian here at Layton High as I went dumpster diving to save my UELMA conference planning binder from the dump. We have really efficient custodians here who don't like to see a box sitting around that could possibly be cleaned up. Seven o'clock at night, in the dark, under the headlights of my car and in bitter cold weather the custodian and I dived in and rescued the binder. Ta-da! Kudos to all the other librarians out there making heroic efforts!!
