[Library Media] Book for troubled student

I am trying to help a teacher find a book that will help a student whose father has just kicked him out of the house to try and save his marriage. Now he has to go live with his mother who is dysfunctional--he has to cook and clean and be the one responsible. I thought of WAITING FOR NORMAL by Conner, but I would like to find a book that would appeal to an 8th grade boy.

Any suggestions? Thanks!
