This has been a year of transitions. In January, I was asked to be the state office representative for Library Media as Georgia Loutensock moved into accreditation. Fortunately, she is still in the office and I can ask her lots of questions (and she graciously answers them). Georgia has so much experience and background; she is amazing, and I'm so glad she is still here.
I'm happy to have the opportunity to work with you in this exciting time. I believe that school libraries and library media specialists have a vital role to play as teachers look for and use more challenging, varied texts and primary source documents alongside the textbook. You have the knowledge and resources to support all content areas in meeting the instructional shifts of the new Utah Core Standards. Thank you!
I wanted to forward some information from Colorado. Many of you may have already seen this graphic that summarizes over two decades of research in Colorado about the impact of certified school librarians on student achievement. The impact studies are also linked to this page. It might be useful in some of the conversations you have about the needs in your local areas: http://www.lrs.org/news/2013/02/27/make-the-case-for-school-libraries-with-our-new-impact-studies-infographic/ The findings of this research: students in schools with certified/endorsed librarians score better on standardized achievement tests.
And a timely thanks to UELMA for a great conference! If you were able to be at Weber State yesterday, you know how hard the UELMA Board worked to create a meaningful day of professional learning. It was much appreciated by all attendees.
Have a great weekend!
