Honoring Native Culture in Oceanside: Local and Sustainable Ethnic Programs in Libraries

Oceanside (Calif.) Public Library librarian Monica Chapa-Domercq discusses how and why her library offers programming specifically for American Indians and Alaskan Natives, even though they make up only 0.8% of her library’s community. “Sometimes,” she notes, “the decision to provide ethnic programs is simply a satisfying and meaningful response to a true need expressed by the community.” Read more…

National Poetry Month celebrates poems and poets, with annual events taking place nationwide in April. Established by the Academy of American Poets in 1996, the goal is to increase the visibility of the poetic form, as well as to increase access to it. Read more…

Jazz Appreciation Month is intended to draw public attention to the glories of jazz as both an historical and a living treasure.
