April 2012

From the Editor

Celebrate National Poetry Month
In her introduction to her anthology Salting the Ocean: 100 Poems by Young Poets, Naomi Shihab Nye calls poetry "the spark that links us all." In this issue of Quick Tips, we suggest ways to bring that spark into the classroom with roundups of new poetry titles, ideas for using poetry to implement the STEM curriculum and the Common Core State Standards, and a linked listing of the top poetry awards for children's literature from Book Links' columnist Sylvia Vardell. April's National Poetry Month gives poetry a wonderful 30-day push into center stage; keep the momentum going throughout the year with these terrific titles, and don't forget to consult the National Poetry Foundation's children's poetry page for more ideas.
Once again, in Salting the Ocean, Nye writes, "We 'use poetry' to restore us to feeling, revitalize our own speech, awaken empathy. . . . Use a poem at the beginning or end of a class. Put a poem on the board and don't even discuss it—let it permeate the atmosphere on its own. . . . Mystery remains part of many poems, as well it should, since it remains part of our lives no matter who or where we are." No matter where you are in the country, we'd love to hear about the poems, and the ways of sharing them, that take off in your classroom.
Happy reading!

Common Core Connections

Poetry and the Common Core State Standards
By Julie Green

Share poetry across the curriculum with these titles that will help you implement Common Core State Standards RL.1.4—RL.6.4.

Though some students shy away from poetry, many children are easily drawn into the creative, colorful, sometimes silly language found in the best poetry titles for youth. A good poetry book will get checked out of the library over and over again until the pages begin to fall out. Poetry provides an excellent opportunity to investigate word choices and to think about the specifics of a writer's craft: both subjects with direct ties to the Common Core State Standards. Implement standards RL.1.4—RL.6.4 with the poetry titles suggested below.
RL.1.4. Identify words and phrases in stories or poems that suggest feelings or appeal to the senses.
In the Wild. By David Elliott. Illus. by Holly Meade. 2010. 32p. Candlewick, $16.99 (9780763644970). PreS–Gr. 2.
Each of the poems from this book describes a different wild animal. Read through the poems and have students create a different anchor chart for each of the five senses.

Focus on science, technology, engineering, and
math with these stand-out poetry titles.

April is Poetry Month, so move your STEM study to the 808 and 811 shelves of your library. That is where the poetry anthologies and collections can be found. An anthology contains work written by many authors, while a collection is written by a single author. Don't forget to check the picture-book shelves, too. Poetry for young children is often written in a picture-book format, and a single poem is illustrated with page after page of delicious art.
Poetry Anthologies
Celebrate ingenuity with Incredible Inventions, which features 16 original poems selected by Lee Bennett Hopkins. Be sure to check the time line in the back matter for more facts about each invention. Find five poems for each season of the year in One Big Rain: Poems for Rainy Days, compiled by Rita Gray.

How do we identify which are the best poetry books for children and young adults? Begin by looking for poetry award winners.

The NCTE Award for Excellence in Poetry for Children
One major award for poetry for children is given by the National Council of Teachers of English to a poet in the U.S. for her or his entire lifetime of writing for children ages 3–13. Established in 1977, it was given annually until 1982, then every three years, and then biennially beginning in 2008. Award criteria fall into four major categories: literary merit, including imagination, voice, persona, universality, and timelessness; the poet's or anthologist's aggregate work, including growth and evolution of craft; the poet's technical and artistic development; and the work's appeal to children. The recipients are a who's who of poetry creators.
