April 2011

From the Editor

Earth Day, National Poetry Month, and More
This year marks my twentieth year in children’s publishing, and in that time I’ve worked with amazingly talented colleagues and witnessed firsthand the huge difference that children’s literature can make in the lives of young people. Now I’m embarking on a new adventure and will be departing from Booklist Publications later this month. It will be difficult to leave a place that seems like home, but I’m ready for the challenges of a new area—health care—a field that has affected me greatly as the parent of a special needs child.
As for how Booklist’s Books for Youth staff will handle my absence, no one here ever seems to miss a step, and as a reader of our publications, you'll find all the high-quality coverage you've come to expect in upcoming issues, including Booklist's Mystery Showcase in May 1 and Book Links’ twentieth anniversary issue in June, which will be devoted to groundbreaking books of the last two decades. In this issue of Quick Tips, look for new environmental books, a fascinating feature on Civil War–era poetry from the Library of Congress, and ideas for making poetry more palatable to reluctant wordsmiths.
Happy reading!

Civil War Poetry—Linking Literature to Primary Sources
by Gail Petri
Mark National Poetry Month by exploring some of the thousands of Civil War poems written by citizens of the time.
"Though the rebellion is dead, though slavery is dead, both rebellion and slavery have left behind influences that will remain with us, it may be, for generations to come." —Frederick Douglass, 1894
Frederick Douglass’ words were prophetic. The Civil War sesquicentennial offers educators an opportunity to investigate and reflect upon this important period in our nation’s history. Why not celebrate National Poetry Month by exploring a sampling of the thousands of Civil War poems written by everyday citizens of the time. [read more]

In the Trenches

Beyond Hearts and Flowers
by Ernie Cox
Encountering student skepticism about the merits of poetry? Try these fun-filled activities.
Enter the mind of a fifth- or sixth-grader (perhaps a boy?) who is required to read poetry for language arts class. Or imagine being in charge of a public library poetry slam. Based on the often negative perception of poetry among children, neither experience may garner much enthusiasm. How this perspective gets rooted into students’ consciousness so early is a mystery. How to turn it around in a hurry is the job of a few great poetry books.
Because it is April, you may already have a display of hall-of-famers of youth poetry—Douglas Florian, Joyce Sidman, Lee Bennett Hopkins, and others. Add a few of these books and ideas into your mix:
Tell those reluctant wordsmiths all they need is A Kick in the Head: An Everyday Guide to Poetic Forms, edited by Paul B. Janeczko and illustrated by Chris Raschka (2005). At least one of the selections in this fun romp through poetry will speak to even the most doubtful young patron.
Get the spoken word out there for all to hear. Have staff and patrons record their favorite poems and post them on the library web page.
In Bob Raczka’s new collection, Lemonade: And Other Poems Squeezed from a Single Word, illustrated by Nancy Doniger (2011), every poem has a single-word title whose letters, when rearranged, make up the words in the following lines. For example, “Pepperoni”: “One / pie / no / pepper / onion.” Using this book as inspiration, have a weekly contest for the best poems created from a single word. Library staff can choose the word and collect submissions, and the best entries can be written on the library windows in washable paint.
Break out the magnetic letters and create a concrete poetry zone. Leave out copies of Betsy Franco’s A Dazzling Display of Dogs, illustrated by Michael Wertz (2011), which captures familiar canine scenes, and encourage some great verses about a kid’s best friend.
Ernie Cox is the teacher-librarian at Mark Twain Elementary School in Iowa City, IA.
