Please email your legislators tonight. Don't think "someone else will do it". Let's all be advocates for ourselves, collectively. Thanks for all you do. Thanks to Sharyl for all she has done on our behalf.

Yesterday, February 11) in the Public Education Appropriations meeting, both a representative of the State Office of Education and the Legislative Fiscal Analyst for Education mentioned removing all of the funding ($1.5 million) specifically appropriated two years ago for school library books and electronic resources for school libraries in order to help meet budget reductions.

Representative Tim Cosgrove, of Murray, continues to support and advise us.

We need YOUR input NOW. Please email the Public Education Appropriations Subcommittee members (see below) by Monday. Use a personal computer, not your school computer.

If there are parents and neighbors whom you know would be supportive, consider asking them also to contact the committee members.

a.. Briefly tell the story of what your students and teachers can do, that they couldn't do before, because of the materials the school library books and electronic resources funding provided.
b.. Show the impact of these materials on your students' learning and on your teachers' ability to teach.
c.. These materials re-enforce the very beginning of students' learning critical thinking skills: in the school library, they learn to evaluate and use information, a basic skill for success throughout their lives.
d.. Be positive rather than negative.
e.. Please do not mention "saving these funds from budget cuts," as most everyone else is asking. Instead, mention the importance of looking for other sources of funding, bonding, even taxing, etc.
f.. Assure them that not all valid information is accessible on the Internet. We still need books. This is true for all students, most apparently, our younger students.
g.. Ask them to make sure that these funds for one of the most essential programs in the overall educational program of the school, be among the first to be restored.

"If school library programs are diminished, then education is harmed. If education is harmed, the future of Utah is harmed."
