The standby classics would be...

Revolution---
My Brother Sam is Dead
Johnny Tremain

Civil War---
Rifles for Watie.

Slavery---
The slave dancer

A newer one on the Civil War---
Red moon at Sharpsburg : a novel by Rosemary Wells. (I haven't read it but
but it has reviewed very well. Cindy Mitchell has labeled it as
"Essential")

Ann Rinaldi has several books on all three subjects.

Miles' Song by Alice McGill intrigues me. Has anyone read it?
