ULA is highlighting November as Environmental Health Month. This coincides with the Eccles Health Sciences InfoFair and Salt Lake City Library presentation by Dr Devra Davis on Friday, November 7, 2008 entitled: The Air We Breathe: Research, Community, Advocacy.

You could advertise this opportunity to inform your science teachers and departments. As well, feel free to refer your patrons to the topic: Environmental
Health on Utahealthnet.org for statewide and national electronic
resources.

The Air We Breathe
November 7th 7:00 p.m.
Main City Library Auditorium
Live Broadcast on KCPW (statewide)

Devra Lee Davis is a leading epidemiologist, public health expert, and
researcher on the environmental causes of cancer and chronic diseases. She
holds a PhD from the University of Chicago and an MPH from the Johns
Hopkins School of Public Health. Dr. Davis is Director of the world's
first Center for Environmental Oncology located at the University of
Pittsburgh Cancer Institute and served as a Lead Author of the
Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change the group awarded the Nobel
Peace Prize in 2007.

In her book When Smoke Ran Like Water, a National Book Awards finalist,
Dr. Davis confronts both public triumphs and private failures in the
battle against environmental pollution. She reports on the deadly London
smog of 1952 (when deaths were falsely attributed to influenza);
behind-the-scenes machinations by oil companies and auto manufacturers to
keep lead in gasoline; and the pollution that killed many in her own
family and forced other survivors of the 1948 smog emergency in Donora,
Pennsylvania to live out their lives with damaged health. Dr. Davis is
also the author of The Secret History of the War on Cancer.

Cosponsored by the Spencer S. Eccles Health Sciences Library, University
of Utah; Utah Physicians for a Healthy Environment; The City Library; and
The Utah Library Association. The author's books will be available for
purchase at the lecture. Dr. Davis is in Salt Lake City to deliver the
Clifford C. Snyder, M.D. and Mary Snyder Lecture at InfoFair 2008
