Subject: ALERT

Greetings!=20
=20
Representative Tim Cosgrove, who presented our one-time $4million
education request for school library books to the Joint Appropriations
Committee for Public Education last Wednesday, just called to say, Now
is the time!" It's a sort of "call to arms."=20
=20
We need letters to the editors (email) of the Salt Lake Tribune and the
Deseret News and emails to the Education Appropriations Committee
members. We need these delivered by Wednesday night. (So much for a
schedule with who will write what, etc. But time is critical! )
=20
Larry Jeppeson will handle getting the word out to UELMA members and
Rebecca simmons will be contacting you, too. Since you signed up to
write or to get someone to do so, I hope that you can pull an email
letter off within the next two days.=20
=20
What is needed is a show of volume. If the Salt Lake Tribune and the
Deseret News receive lots and lots of letters, they will know something
is up and it could influence decisions. Thursday is the first
prioritization. I'll hope for the best.=20
=20
With your help, we can influence the outcome.
=20
What's needed:=20
=20
A letter that tells how an up-to-date library book collection affects
academic success and kids in your school learning to read. Your own
words and real stories help.=20
=20
Relate your collection to what's taught in the classroom and how you
have helped to motivate kids to read with your books.
=20
In referring to the funding, emphasize that we are asking for one-time
only funding. (If committee members think it's ongoing, in this session,
it will doom our chances--says Rep. Cosgrove.)
=20
Write about what you think will make the most difference.
=20
The rest is up to you!=20
=20
Written in haste,
=20
Sharyl
=20
