TECH TIPS & TRICKS: FINDING AND USING PICTURES & GRAPHICS

With more than 10,000 pictures on SIRS DISCOVERER, how do you find just =
the
right one?  From the main=20
portal page, select 'Pictures' from the database features section on the
right.   Picture titles are listed in=20
alphabetical order for you to browse, or you can search for a picture =
title
by entering a keyword into the search=20
box.  There is even a separate category for all maps.  Select the =
picture
title to view the picture. =20

Some sample searches follow:
-- Space Shuttle
-- Homeless
-- Puzzle
-- Flag
-- Volcano* (* indicates Truncated Search)

SIRS KNOWLEDGE SOURCE users may search for graphics, charts, graphs, =
tables,
photographs and=20
illustrations by selecting the Advanced Search Tab and entering keywords
under the 3rd option to search=20
graphic titles. Select the graphic title to view the graphic. =20

USING PICTURES & GRAPHICS
Once you locate a picture you would like to use, right-click on the =
picture
(Mac users control + click) and=20
choose to save the picture to your computer or floppy disk.  =
Alternately,
select Copy to copy it to the clipboard.  =20
Most word processing or presentation programs will allow you to paste =
the
picture directly into your report by=20
selecting Control-V or selecting Edit from the program menu and then =
Paste.

Hint:  Articles accompany every picture or graphic.  Check the box next =
to
picture/graphic when using SIRS E- mail function to send the graphic =
along
with the article to your home e-mail address as an attachment.=20

LEWIS & CLARK PHOTO ESSAYS NOW AVAILABLE ONLINE

In celebration of the Lewis & Clark Bicentennial, SIRS has developed a =
set
of 32 posters with images of their=20
journey accompanied by brief, yet educational text. The images and text =
are
available can be viewed on=20
Discoverer and will be available in print in March. Students can =
experience
the Lewis & Clark expedition=20
firsthand. Each comprehensive unit of eight covers an aspect of the
expedition, they include: Native=20
Americans; Historical Aspects; Plants & Animals; and Sites Along the =
Way.=20

To access SIRS Photo Essays, go to SIRS Discoverer opening page. In the =
box
on the lower right, Database=20
Features, scroll down and click on Photo Essays.
