SIRS SPOTLIGHTS OF THE MONTH
December 2002

Human rights violations continue to be an international problem despite
protests lodged against alleged perpetrators by the United States and
groups such as Amnesty International. Even the United States has been
accused of violations, especially since it continues to impose the death
penalty; a punishment some observers allege is applied unfairly and
often erroneously. SIRS RESEARCHER SPOTLIGHT, UNIVERSAL HUMAN RIGHTS
MONTH, provides articles that cover various human rights violations
worldwide and explains how countries react to these abuses. Articles
include: "Human Rights in the Shadow of September 11," "Slavery in the
21st Century," "The Ultimate Growth Industry: Trafficking in Women and
Girls," "Islam and Women's Rights" and "Amnesty International:
Monitoring Human Rights Around the World."

SIRS RENAISSANCE
******************
The SIRS RENAISSANCE SPOTLIGHT OF THE MONTH, WINTER OBSERVANCES &
CELEBRATIONS, highlights worldwide and historical mystical, religious
and artistic observances and rituals associated with the winter season.
Learn about the origins and meanings of regional European Advent
traditions, the aesthetics of Hanukkah menorah design, the tenets of
Kwanzaa, the story of St. Valentine's Day and more in articles such as
"The Glocklerlauf: Midwinter Celebration in Austria's Ebensee," "Fasting
Days, Festive Nights: Ramadan in Cairo," "Christmas Tomes," "Festivals
of Fire and Flame: Marking the Turnings of the Year," "Seven Days of
Kwanzaa Activities Begin Today" and "Ice Sculpting Comes In from the
Cold in Russia."
