Substance abuse in the United States is a continuing problem at home, in
the workplace and in our schools. Some of these drugs are very expensive
and some, such as inhalants, can be purchased inexpensively at the local
hardware store. Addicts often commit serious crimes to obtain money
needed to support their habits, which is reflected in the country's
crime rate. SIRS Researcher identifies the drugs that pose a problem for
society and examines the issues involved with addiction to those
substances, including prevention and treatment. SIRS RESEARCHER
SPOTLIGHT OF THE MONTH recognizes SUBSTANCE ABUSE PREVENTION MONTH with
the following articles: "New Vistas in Drug Abuse Prevention," "The
Economics of Drug Violence," "GHB: Grievous Bodily Harm," "Cocaine
Before Birth" and "Drug Policy and Program."

SIRS RENAISSANCE
******************
The Nobel Peace Prize, awarded nearly every year since its establishment
in 1901, recognizes individuals who have promoted unity and who have
cultivated harmony among the nations of the world. Administered from
Norway, this prestigious award bestows a diploma, a medallion and a cash
prize to its recipient; more importantly, the Nobel Peace Prize allows
the beneficiary to expand his or her international peace work. The SIRS
RENAISSANCE SPOTLIGHT OF THE MONTH, NOBEL PEACE PRIZES, examines the
extensive history of the prize and features profiles of its founder and
several of its recipients, including the Dalai Lama, Mother Teresa and
Ralph Bunche. Articles include "Alfred Nobel and His Prizes," "The Nobel
Peace Prize: Prize Above All Prizes?" "Mother Teresa" and "Ralph Bunche
Reconsidered: An Interview with William Greaves."
