They are sponsored by Grassroots Workshops and Stanford University/Jo Boaler (author of ?Mathematical Mindsets?). Also, USBE is revamping the pathways that teachers can take to become certified to teach Secondary Mathematics. A committee has met and made recommendations. You can view the proposed pathways and give feedback by clicking on the link in the email below. ACTION: If you are interested in attending any of the professional learning opportunities described below, click on the links embedded in the email. If you have any questions, email Lindsey Henderson at USBE lindsey.henderson at schools.utah.gov Thanks! Secondary Math Team USBE Sponsored Professional Learning Collaborations I (Lindsey) have so much exciting news to share on the Secondary Mathematics Professional Learning front! I have arranged to collaborate with (and provide funding for) Grassroots Workshops, Stanford University, and YouCubed to bring several amazing professional learning opportunities to Utah Secondary Mathematics humans! I am excited to share these opportunities with our community because I have taken each of the professional learning courses I am offering below and I can say without hesitation that they are in the top 10% of professional learning experiences in terms of impact on my teaching practices! Here are the details: [https://mcusercontent.com/e171734d6ebc9fff0f1fccc12/images/9cd77d25-6861-40ac-acbe-a16730cc0193.jpg] * Tuition is covered if you register here (I have funds for ~75 humans). * Each course is collaboratively asynchronous and complete at your own pace (I ask that you finish each course by August 30th, 2021). * Each course takes approximately 7 hours of seat time to complete and earns 0.5 USBE Credit Hours. Every year, Secondary Math humans who wish to become a Secondary Mathematics Educator must earn a Teaching License and a Content Endorsement. The current Level 2, 3, and 4 Mathematics Endorsements will be changing Summer of 2023 based on the committee's work and we are pleased to open up the Secondary Mathematics Competency-Based Endorsement for stakeholder review (that's you!). You can submit your feedback asynchronously here (please feel free to submit as many or as few times as you wish). You can meet with me (Lindsey) synchronously to talk about the new endorsement on: * March 10th from 10 AM - 11 AM (meeting link) or * March 5th from 3:30 PM - 4:30 PM (meeting link) Here is information on the new endorsement competencies and pathways: * Defined Competencies for beginning secondary mathematics teachers. * Pathway?s draft * Here is a link to our current pathway so that you can compare and contrast. If you are familiar with the current Level 2, 3, and 4 Mathematicas endorsement, please take note of some notable changes in the Competency-Based Math Endorsement: * Currently, we have Level 2, 3, and 4 Mathematics endorsements?our new draft has only two secondary math endorsements, a Middle School Endorsement and a Secondary Mathematics Endorsement. * The Middle School is approx. equivalent to the current Level 2 minus the PRAXIS exam requirement and teachers with the new Middle School endorsement can teach through SM1 Extended (aka Honors). Take note of the Calculus OR Calculus for Secondary Math Teachers course?the committee felt that Calculus was a barrier for this endorsement and wanted to offer a conceptual-based calculus for teachers. * Middle School is approximately equal to a Mathematics Minor. * Secondary Math Endorsement is approximately equivalent to the current level 4 and a Math Major?minus the PRAXIS exam requirement and we?ve put in a list of choices for some upper-level math coursework on option j. * In both the Middle School and Secondary Math endorsements, notice that the three "for teachers" math courses (Algebra, Geometry, Statstics and Probability for Secondary Math Teachers) are listed twice with asterisks (once in the Dispositions, Skills, and Pedagogy area #1 and once in the Content Area #2)?prospective math teachers can choose to take the three courses and get ?credit? in both areas?like a 2 for 1 situation?or they can choose the microcredential(s) for Area #1 (more info below) and then they still may have to take the methods courses for the content piece in Area #2. * The committee has added alternative ways to demonstrate competency such as microcredentials (still to be developed expected timeline is Fall 2021), National Board Certification, and university coursework among others. (contrast this with the current endorsement process which has only one pathway and that is coursework at an accredited university.) * The new endorsements and processes will be rolled out over several years and people who are endorsed on the current Level 2, 3, or 4 endorsement will be grandfathered and humans working on a level 2, 3, or 4 endorsement will also be given 2 years to complete what they started (the new Competency Based Endorsement will go into effect summer 2023). There will be several years where we have the new endorsement requirements and the soon to be expired level 2, 3, and 4 endorsement requirements. The resources are organized around six main areas: 1. Purpose and Vision 2. Customized Supports 3. Student Agency 4. Equity 5. Demonstrated Competency and Assessment, and 6. Social-Emotional Learning Our intent is to support Utah?s educators in advancing their knowledge and skills in key areas that continue to be of the highest concern. The resources are limited to 2-3 ideas per area to really focus the resources on the highest quality tools and information knowing educator time is limited. In the meantime, take a look at this Middle School Math Contest hosted by MoMath: The National Museum of Mathematics is pleased to announce the 2021 Con Edison MoMathlon middle school math tournament, now hosted virtually! Sponsored by Con Edison, the MoMathlon provides an enriching day of challenges and camaraderie for middle school students, allowing them to experience the fun and exhilaration of working together with friends, old and new, toward a common goal. This year's online tournament will be held via Zoom on Thursday, March 18. Schools may register teams of five 7th and 8th grade students to participate, and each team must be accompanied by an educator who will chaperone his or her students and proctor other teams. Registration is now open; please visit momathlon.momath.org for more information or to register. Due to limited capacity, early registration is strongly advised. Financial aid is available for Title I schools in select regions; email tournament at momath.org to apply. We hope to see you there! Now that I've read this book, I think that student's success is shaped by their experiences and can be improved through the way we present our material to students.
