Secondary Math Teachers,

This email contains information about the Utah Mathematics Endorsement Project that is run through Utah State (information and action).

Utah Mathematics Endorsement Project
If you are interested in pursuing a secondary Math Endorsement (Level II, Special Education, Level III, or Level IV), The Utah Mathematics Endorsement Program (UMEP) may be just what you are looking for (see the attached flyer for general information about UMEP. Please contact Eric Rowley eric.rowley at usu.edu<mailto:eric.rowley at usu.edu> if you are interested in UMEP, AND you have not corresponded with him about the program in the past.
Please see email below for more information.
Allison

Dear, Future, and Potential UMEP Participants:
I hope this message finds you well and that you are coping with this crazy world we are living in. If you are interested in pursuing a secondary Math Endorsement (Level II, Special Education, Level III, or Level IV), The Utah Mathematics Endorsement Program (UMEP) may be just what you are looking for (see the attached flyer for general information about UMEP. Please contact me at eric.rowley at usu.edu<mailto:eric.rowley at usu.edu> if you are interested in UMEP, but we have not corresponded about the program in the past.
This message contains specific information about admission and registration for Summer 2020 classes and Fall 2020 classes. As you can imagine USU (like everyone/everything else) has taken measures in response to the coronavirus crisis (including some that effect summer classes). The good news is that the summer UMEP classes are still on and I don’t anticipate that changing. More news (not sure if it is good or bad) is that the classes planned for the first 7-week summer session had to be changed from Broadcast format (which requires participants to attend classes live at a USU facility) to either Online format or “Web Broadcast” format (which requires participants to attend classes live, but they can join from home). For now, classes scheduled in the second 7-week session and fall semester remain set up as regular broadcast classes.

First 7-Week Summer 2020 Session (May 4 – June 19) UMEP Classes:
Math 4910-B, Conceptual Calculus II)—Web Broadcast (TR 7:15-9:45 PM)
Math 3110, Modern Geometry (a.k.a Euclidean and Non-Euclidean Geometry)—Web Broadcast (TR 4:30-7:00 PM)
Math 4910-LD, Linear Algebra and Differential Equations)—online
Math 5010, Technology for Teaching Mathematics (a.k.a Geometry for Secondary Teachers)—online

Second 7-Week Summer 2020 Session (June 22 – August 7) UMEP Classes:
Math 3010, Pedagogical Foundations of Algebra (a.k.a. Algebra for Secondary Teachers), MW 7:15-9:45 PM
Math 4500, Methods of Secondary School Mathematics Teaching (MW 4:30-7:00 PM)
Stat 4010, Probability and Statistics for Secondary Teachers (TR 4:30-7:00 PM)

Fall 2020 Semester
Math 4910-C, Multivariable Calculus (R 8:00-10:30 PM)
Math 4310, Algebraic Structures (T 8:00-10:30 PM)

Admission to USU:
The UMEP program is based out of Utah State University. Unless you have attended USU recently, you will likely need to apply to the university before you can register for classes. Regardless of the level of class you want to take, you should apply as a graduate student since you already have a graduate degree (unless, perhaps, you plan to pursue a 2nd Bachelors degree). The USU School of Graduate studies is implementing changes to the admission process for teachers pursuing secondary math endorsements. The changes are not fully implemented. As it currently stands, you will apply as a graduate pursuing a Level II Math Endorsement (regardless of what level of endorsement you ultimately plan to earn). Once the changes with admission process are fully implemented, your status can be changed to Level III, IV, or Special Education Math Endorsement. It really doesn’t matter what program you are associated with, so long as you are admitted and can register for classes.
Any teacher who has been admitted to USU and meets course prerequisites is welcome to enroll in UMEP courses. USU admission and registration instructions are attached. There is no admission fee if you use the fee waiver promo code included in the instructions.
Registration for Spring 2020 Classes (January 6 – April 29):
The registration period for Summer Semester 2020 has begun. Registration for Fall 2020 begins April 6. USU admission and registration instructions are attached. Course Registration Numbers (CRN’s) are also attached. Do not register for a class unless you have met the prerequisites for that class (as listed on the attached UMEP Flyer). As you know, things change on a daily basis. The decision of which 1st 7-week classes to move to online/Web Broadcast was only made recently. This change made it so that Course Registration Numbers had to be reassigned, hence the lateness of this email (CRN’s for some locations have yet to be assigned). If you do not see a CRN for a course you need at your location, please contact me (I’ll likely be able to get the course arranged at your location).
Tuition Assistance:
The USU Regional Campuses administrators have generously agreed to provide 25% Off Tuition Waivers. Be advised that USU has restrictions on the amount of tuition each campus/region may waive. Since USU’s Salt Lake City and Provo centers have other commitments, waivers for UMEP participants at those locations will be limited on a first come, first serve, basis to 20 in SLC and 10 in Provo (per-class) or whenever the money runs out, whichever happens first (to date, no eligible person who has applied has been turned down). Tuition waivers are a USU Statewide Campuses initiative and are thus are sadly not available to students on Logan Campus. Tuition waivers are typically not applied to your account until a few weeks into the semester. You must apply for the tuition waiver each semester (instructions will be sent in a follow-up email—that is one detail that escaped my mind while dealing with all the coronavirus stuff).
Last summer the Utah State Board of Education announced exciting news: Teachers pursuing stem endorsements (including all levels of secondary math endorsements) can be reimbursed up to $1,200 per class through the Utah STEM Endorsement Incentive Program. This funding is not directly connected to UMEP. Districts apply to USBE for the funding and teachers apply to their districts for reimbursements. More information is provided on the FAQ Document<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__docs.google.com_document_d_1yaKIl7cB3kpC5Ln1XXQWGbeqLa1k9KcGUC-5FrBbQ57Xs_edit&d=DwMGaQ&c=fGrSkuu3YyS91PacIZP0XfO0GRH7JgL5znLEO6-CQG0&r=hD1RgVtVAfjHqM6ipl7VgIa9sOnyksaDjm7Cex6HZqan_jJHJ-cb-QMyiG7IG6q9&m=ztdOCMdY2XNZjIgVMbzLBDT9CURIRBSm0P5FojTUNZs&s=tJv3pk708cNL-pEQuSOBss7ZFmxoiEi39LtzHJn_lU0&e=>. Any questions should be directed to your district or USBE (contact Joleigh Honey, State Math Specialist, at (Joleigh.honey at schools.utah.gov<mailto:Joleigh.honey at schools.utah.gov>).
Between the 25% off tuition waivers and the $1,200 per class from the state, UMEP courses are little to no cost.
While expansion is possible in the future, currently the UMEP program is primarily for teachers with (or pursuing) a secondary teaching license who are working toward a Level III/IV Math Endorsement. Where there is overlap in requirements, teachers pursuing Level II or Special Ed Math Endorsements are welcome to enroll in UMEP classes (so long as prerequisites have been met). Special Ed teachers pursuing the Special Ed Math Endorsement may be able to get additional financial assistance from the Special Education Department of USOE (contact Kim Fratto <Kim.Fratto at schools.utah.gov<mailto:Kim.Fratto at schools.utah.gov>> for more information).
Please don’t hesitate to contact me with any questions you may have. Good luck throughout the rest of the academic year, with Spring Semester courses, and on into future semesters.
THANK YOU,
Eric Rowley
