We have an opportunity to highlight exemplary mathematics instruction while integrating technology. I would like to introduce you to Melanie Durfee who is a Digital Teaching and Learning specialist at USBE. Melanie has received many requests from the field for examples of high-quality mathematics instruction with technology integrated in meaningful ways. This may look like teachers appropriately using technology to implement mathematical tasks in their classrooms. This could be using technology in the launch of a task, as a way for students to collaborate and share strategies, to collect information, etc. Melanie is specifically looking for teachers who could host webinars regarding the use of technology in task-based mathematics instruction. She can hire teachers (for the payment of a $100 iTunes card) to present at webinars held throughout the year. The series of webinars are called Take on Teaching. Interested educators can apply using THIS FORM. Presentations in which multiple teachers and students are involved are most powerful. The mathematics content and pedagogy are the most important part of the presentation. If someone has some good ideas but isn?t sure about the technology, Melanie can help walk them through some steps. Please share this information with educators who could contribute to this body of knowledge. Thank you for your help in spreading the word! The attached TSSP Invitation 2019 has been provided to you to use as a resource or to share with your classroom educators who currently work in the areas of: * Secondary Mathematics * Physics, Chemistry, Physical Science, Integrated Science * Computer Science * Special Education * and/or educators who hold a current National Board for Professional Teacher Standards certification during the 2018-2019 program year. Program details including legislative requirements can be reviewed at https://schools.utah.gov/curr/licensing/tssp under the Program, National Board for Professional Teaching Standard and Resources tabs. Please encourage your educators to review this site prior to submitting their application on the TSSP Service Site. This year?s new legislation welcomes our valued educators in the Special Education field. As with any change to legislation, we are asking for a close review of each educator?s CACTUS data to verify the accuracy of: * Assignments * Assignment percentages (must total 100%) * Full-Time-Equivalency (FTE) * Posted degrees. Any data errors not corrected will affect the accuracy or eligibility of your teachers and may cause a delay in funding. Participating educators will be directed to contact their Human Resources or CACTUS Administrator to report any data corrections needed. Any change to CACTUS will automatically update in the TSSP Service Site and be visible in the educator?s application. The TSSP legislation still requires that teachers hold a degree with a major that matches the participating subject area to be eligible for the bonus. All corrections/updates for degrees must be submitted with original transcripts to the USBE. Please be sure that your team or teachers follow the Transcript Submission Policy found on the USBE website https://schools.utah.gov/curr/licensing/additionalprocesses. Greetings, all! It's time to think about the State Math Contest again! The date is Tuesday, March 5, 2019. Weber State University will be the main location for the contest with options to take the test at SUU, USU Eastern in Price, Blanding, and a new location this year, Uintah Basin! We are doing registration a little differently than last year. We will have each school reserve the number of spots they want, up to 15 per grade, by November 1, 2018. As we procure buildings and rooms at Weber State University, we will notify schools by November 15, 2018 of the number of spots they can have based on available space. The fee is $25 per student, and it will need to be paid by January 3, 2019. This will get the student the opportunity to take a fun test, a lunch, and a goodie bag. Spots that are not paid for by that time will be forfeited. Each school will have until February 15, 2019 to determine who they will send and what dietary restrictions will be needed for lunch. We are also in need of proctors. If you can bring any volunteer proctors (ages 18 and above), please include their names and emails on the reservation form. At that time, the school board directed Dr. Amber Roderick-Lanward to gather information from teachers on their opinion of the new curriculum adoption. Most comments from parents were against adoption (8 of 9 comments). Royce Shelly, from Corner Canyon High School, expressed his concerns about the curriculum adoption, which can be heard on the recording of the board meeting under the ?New Business item B?. Royce discussed the issue that curriculum for high school has been rewritten twice since the new Utah core standards and the need to rewrite the curriculum again if the new online math book proposal is adopted, especially if adopted ?with fidelity? as stated in the proposal. Please look for inquiries from the Instructional Supports Department (ISD) asking for your opinion on adopting the new online math book. Some schools are piloting the new curriculum this year. The school board expects teachers to be asked for input by ISD prior to the next board meeting on November 13.
