Subject: Dissertation Study - Seeking Participants for a Study on Teacher Knowledge Development
My name is Kami Dupree and I am a doctoral student in the Emma Eccles Jones College of Education and Human Services at Utah State University. I am conducting a dissertation study in collaboration with my faculty advisor Dr. Patricia Moyer-Packenham to explore how secondary mathematics teachers respond to pivotal teaching moments in the classroom and how these moments are related to teachers' own knowledge development.
This study has received IRB approval at Utah State University (protocol #8422) and will consist of my observing classrooms of secondary mathematics teachers who have earned a Bachelor's degree or higher in mathematics, statistics, or education and who have at least three full years of experience teaching secondary mathematics.
I am currently identifying teachers interested in participating in this study. If you are interested in participating, you will be asked to complete a brief online survey to verify that you meet certain criteria for inclusion in the study. Teachers who return the online survey and who meet the desired criteria for inclusion may be asked to consent to a single classroom observation of a full instructional period and brief 30 minute interview following the observation. Not all teachers who complete the online survey will necessarily be selected for this initial observation and interview, and not all teachers who complete the initial observation and interview will be selected for full participation in the remaining study procedures.
Six teachers will be selected for full participation in the study. Teachers selected for full participation will consent to a brief orientation visit and interview as well as four separate school visits, each consisting of an observation of two instructional periods and an interview session in between. Teachers selected for full participation will be expected to be available for these visits for approximately 12 weeks, but will only be observed during four of those weeks.
Only those teachers selected for full participation will be compensated for their time. Teachers indicating interest and/or who complete the online survey, but are not selected for full participation will not be compensated.
If you are interested in participating in this study and would like to receive the online survey, please contact me at kami.dupree at usu.edu using a valid email address for communication. Alternatively, you may also contact me at 801-554-2368 to indicate interest in participating in this study.
If you know other secondary mathematics teachers who may be interested in this study opportunity, this email may be forwarded to any secondary mathematics teacher.
