New: Summer USBE Online Courses in Elementary & Secondary Mathematics - May 10th, 2018 - August 1st, 2018
Courses available for enrollment:

  * Progressions in Place Value for Teachers Grades K-2
  * Progressions in Fractions for Teachers Grades 3-5
  *   Magnifying 6th Grade Mathematics
  *   Magnifying 8th Grade Mathematics

For more information on each course, please see below:

Progressions in Place Value for Teachers Grades K-2
Place value is an essential foundation in mathematics. Young mathematicians build understanding through counting, familiarity with the base-ten system, and applying their understanding to the operations of addition and subtraction. This course, specifically designed for the kindergarten, first, and second grade teachers offers this essential place value content in addition to research-based pedagogy, and a compilation of valuable resources.
Online, 1.0 SUU or USBE credit hour
Instructor: Lise Welch

Progressions in Fractions for Teachers Grades 3-5
This course highlights the progression of fraction standards in grades 3-5. Participants will build from a foundation of how a student's development of fractional thinking in grades K-2 leads the way to building a strong conceptual and representational understanding in grades 3-5. Through engaging in reading research, mathematical tasks, discussion posts, and viewing videos of teaching practice, participants will link operation sense within whole numbers to fractions and solidify their understanding of visual fraction models. Participants will deepen their passion for math and develop ways to promote a growth mindset with students.

Magnifying 6th Grade Mathematics

This course highlights connections between sixth grade standards and standards from previous grades as well as beyond sixth grade. Participants will focus on understanding how particular sixth grade standards build conceptual understandings that support future learning while other standards are a procedural culmination of previous grades. Math, at all levels, should be taught conceptually with the use of various representations such as concrete models, drawings and diagrams, and equations. This course demonstrates the use of such representations and offers participants the opportunity to engage in creating their own models. Participants will gain ideas for engaging students in activities that develop positive attitudes and dispositions, build essential understandings, and promote a growth mindset with regard to mathematics.

Magnifying 8th Grade Mathematics

Eighth grade is an essential part of students’ middle school mathematical experience. In the course, Magnifying 8th grade Mathematics, we will take a deep look into what makes 8th grade mathematics unique and the essential understandings that every student needs to leave 8th grade knowing to be confident in high school mathematics. We will identify key differences between the
8th grade and 9th grade concepts so that math educators are familiar with the separation between the two grade levels. We will also connect prior learning from 7th grade mathematics and discuss how 8th grade teachers can use this to help their student’s become successful in learning the 8th grade core.

Math Teacher's Circle 2017-2018

Math Teacher's Circle will be held the first Thursday of each month, alternating between Westlake HS and Taylorsville HS from 4-6pm. Any and all math teachers, as well as any other interested parties may attend and are encouraged to do so.

What is a Math Teacher's Circle? It is like a book club for math. We first start with a delicious meal while informally socializing. After about half an hour we jump in and work on an interesting math problem in small groups. After about an hour of productive struggle, we come together and share our solution strategies and discuss implications of using this type of approach in our math classes and other pedagogical issues.

Math Teacher's Circles are fun and invigorating. You work with quality people. You discuss interesting ideas. It is free and you get free food. And you will be done in time to spend the evening with your family.

Give it a try! After the first meeting, you can decide if it is for you. And you might even want to recruit others to come.

For more information, or just to let me know you are coming so I can plan for food, contact me, Troy Jones: tjones at alpinedistrict.org<mailto:tjones at alpinedistrict.org>

All other dates:

Thursday, February 1st Taylorsville HS (room G204)

Thursday, March 1st Westlake HS (room C132)

Thursday, April 12th Taylorsville HS (room G204) (April 5th is during Spring Break)

Thursday, May 3rd Westlake HS (room C132)
