Subject: [STEM] AWE+SUM 2017

Note to 7th grade math & science teachers:

The AWE+SUM camp at Westminster College is a 4-day residential STEM-theme camp for entering 8th grade girls, held this summer June 19 - 22. At the moment, there are 20-25 spots still available in the camp for interested girls. Info about the camp is on the website

including a printable flyer, an application form, and a link for teachers to submit recommendations for girls. There are 12 workshops during the 4 days, led by female faculty and grad students at Westminster and at the U of U. Topics include math, chemistry, physics, medicine, neuroscience, and biology. Emphasis at the camp will be on encouraging girls to take courses in these challenging subject areas. They will have the chance to meet quite a few professional women in the community. But there's also time each afternoon for swimming, trying out the climbing wall on campus, and other fun activities. Most of all, girls get an early chance to see what college life might be like for them. They are well-chaperoned at all times by trained camp counselors, female (of course!), most of whom are math and science majors at Westminster.

This program is in its 13th year and has numerous donors and sponsors: primarily NASA, the MAA (Mathematical Association of America), and AAUW (American Assoc. of University Women). These and other organizations have provided funding for scholarships: any girl who asks for a full or partial scholarship is very likely to receive it. We especially wish to reach girls of all ethnicities: there will most likely be a large group attending the camp from the Navajo Nation.

Please help spread the word about the camp to your 7th grade girls. It's an experience they should not miss!

For questions about the camp, email awesumcamp at gmail.com<mailto:awesumcamp at gmail.com>.
