Secondary Math Teachers,

This email, which is being forwarded from USBE, contains information about:

1. 11th Grade SAGE Opt Out (information only)
2. SAGE Question Item Update (IMPORTANT information, Please read carefully)

USBE sent out the email below regarding this years SAGE math assessments:

11th Grade Opt-Out

Some districts have requested that the 11th grade opt-out be done on a test-by-test basis rather than a subject-by-subject basis. This has been granted to the requesting districts. This means that Those districts may have opted-out the juniors in SM3 but still requested that the juniors in SM1 and SM2 still test. Please defer to your assessment director at your LEA and your testing coordinators at your schools. Opted-out students will be removed from the system automatically. If a test is in the system, it should be administered to the appropriate student.

What has not changed is that this still only applies to JUNIORS. Students who are in SM# as 10th graders cannot be opted-out by the LEA. They should still be assessed as normal.

Canyons School District has chosen to opt out 11th graders taking Secondary Math III and III H from taking the SAGE exam.

Linking Study

USBE has been planning to do a validation of the vertical scaling on the scaled score students receive. This was initially planned for the 2018 test, but was very recently pushed up. We will now be performing the study this year.

What this means to you is that we need students in adjacent grades to see the same items. This means that some student will be exposed to items from a higher grade level. These items will not affect a student’s score or extend the test length. You will most likely hear teachers comment that the test doesn’t match the core. In this respect they will be correct. The scored items, however, will match the core.

There is no need to tell students there will be above grade-level questions. However, it is essential that students are prepared to see things they probably won’t know how to handle. Below are two examples of the messaging teachers could use with students in an ethical and unethical way.

Unethical message: “There will be questions on this test that we haven’t talked about in this class. They won’t be scored so don’t spend very long on those questions and don’t worry if you get the wrong answer.”

Ethical Message: “SAGE is designed to get more difficult as it determines you are a more capable mathematician. You will most likely get questions that you don’t immediately know how to do. That’s how SAGE tells you that you are doing something right. Do your best and don’t be frustrated if you don’t know how to do every question.”

If you have any questions about the test, feel free to contact Todd Vawdrey directly.

Thanks for all you do for Utah students,

Todd Vawdrey
