From ALLISON.DUNCAN at canyonsdistrict.org Tue Mar 21 09:29:44 2017 From: ALLISON.DUNCAN at canyonsdistrict.org (Duncan, Allison) Date: Tue, 21 Mar 2017 15:29:44 +0000 Subject: [CSD Math MS] ISD: Secondary Math SAGE Assessment Updates Message-ID: Secondary Math Teachers, This email, which is being forwarded from USBE, contains information about: 1. 11th Grade SAGE Opt Out (information only) 2. SAGE Question Item Update (IMPORTANT information, Please read carefully) USBE sent out the email below regarding this years SAGE math assessments: 11th Grade Opt-Out Some districts have requested that the 11th grade opt-out be done on a test-by-test basis rather than a subject-by-subject basis. This has been granted to the requesting districts. This means that Those districts may have opted-out the juniors in SM3 but still requested that the juniors in SM1 and SM2 still test. Please defer to your assessment director at your LEA and your testing coordinators at your schools. Opted-out students will be removed from the system automatically. If a test is in the system, it should be administered to the appropriate student. What has not changed is that this still only applies to JUNIORS. Students who are in SM# as 10th graders cannot be opted-out by the LEA. They should still be assessed as normal. Canyons School District has chosen to opt out 11th graders taking Secondary Math III and III H from taking the SAGE exam. Linking Study USBE has been planning to do a validation of the vertical scaling on the scaled score students receive. This was initially planned for the 2018 test, but was very recently pushed up. We will now be performing the study this year. What this means to you is that we need students in adjacent grades to see the same items. This means that some student will be exposed to items from a higher grade level. These items will not affect a student?s score or extend the test length. You will most likely hear teachers comment that the test doesn?t match the core. In this respect they will be correct. The scored items, however, will match the core. There is no need to tell students there will be above grade-level questions. However, it is essential that students are prepared to see things they probably won?t know how to handle. Below are two examples of the messaging teachers could use with students in an ethical and unethical way. Unethical message: ?There will be questions on this test that we haven?t talked about in this class. They won?t be scored so don?t spend very long on those questions and don?t worry if you get the wrong answer.? Ethical Message: ?SAGE is designed to get more difficult as it determines you are a more capable mathematician. You will most likely get questions that you don?t immediately know how to do. That?s how SAGE tells you that you are doing something right. Do your best and don?t be frustrated if you don?t know how to do every question.? If you have any questions about the test, feel free to contact Todd Vawdrey directly. Please see email below and attached flyers. From: STEM > on behalf of "Young, Sarah" > Date: Monday, March 27, 2017 at 10:35 PM To: "stem at lists.uen.org" > Cc: Kaitlin Felsted > Subject: [STEM] Opportunity for teacher leaders Hope Street Group (HSG) and the National Network of State Teachers of the Year (NNSTOY), two nonpartisan nonprofits that connect classroom teachers with their peers and decision makers, will soon recruit their first cohort of Utah Teacher Fellows (TFs). We hope you?ll get the word out to passionate and solutions-oriented educators. The programoperates in four other states (Hi, KY, NC & TN) and is launching UT now along with AZ. The online application opensApril 1, 2017, but interested teachers can learn more now by visiting apply.hopestreetgroup.org/res/p/utah. Teachers can also hear about the program firsthand and prepare to apply by joining an Information Session Webinar. You may register for this session -- 3/28, 7:30pm MT -- here. The Utah program has been carefully designed to develop the competencies of great teachers, providing them with tools to engage their colleagues and generate solutions to education challenges. To date, Fellows have met state and federal decision makers, attended regional and national convenings, and been featured in multiple publications. See how Fellows view the program in the short video here. State specific highlights can be found at this link: Impact Points. Utah Fellows will be teachers who remain in their schools full-time and contribute ~10 hours monthly to program activities including data collections, professional learning sessions and partner meetings. They will be mentored by a Utah State Teacher of the Year throughout their participation in the program. Please help us by distributing this save-the-date information to teachers in your network via newsletter, personal emails and/or social media posts. Two ideas are attached. Again, the online application will open April 1 and all materials must be submitted by April 30 to be considered. If you have questions, please direct them to my colleague Celia Gregory at fellowship at hopestreetgroup.org.
