In the Place @ the Friday Institute, you will find MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) designed for educators. The Teaching Statistics Through Data Investigations MOOC-Ed is a completely FREE professional learning opportunity that is designed to develop the pedagogy and content understanding for teachers in middle school, high school, and at postsecondary levels. The course was built by expert teacher educators in their field and on research-based models of effective professional development, professional learning communities, and online communities of practice. Registration for the course is now open and will available through May 2017. All course materials are now available to educators so that they can engage with materials and resources at their own pace. This self-directed experience has learning opportunities for even the busiest educators! At the end of the course, participants can request a 20-hr Certificate of Completion. In some states, such as North Carolina, teachers are also eligible to receive renewal credits, Continuing Education Units (CEUs). Teachers can also earn CEUs by completing performance-based assessments, called micro-credentials, either without completing the 20-hr certificate (2.0 CEUs), or they can earn additional hours. There are 6 micro-credential opportunities, each worth 0.5-0.75 CEUs. See the attached flyer for a short description of the various ways to earn CEUs. Teachers will need to contact their local state agencies to inquire about the eligibility in their states. The course may also be a great opportunity for teachers to work in teams or PLCs to complete the course together. If you think the MOOC-Ed described below is a good fit for educators in your state, please share this information with them in order to disseminate information about the courses as widely as possible to District/LEA and teacher networks. Let us know if you have any questions, and thank you! Below is a brief description of the MOOC: Teaching Statistics Through Data Investigations This course is applicable to anyone interested in strengthening their approaches to teaching statistics through data investigations. Educators learn to use online data sources and analysis tools as well as understand a framework for designing instruction and assessment to support students' statistical investigations. The statistical content and strategies are appropriate for implementation with middle school through early college learners. Thus, teachers of statistics in grades 6-12 and in post-secondary contexts are the primary audience. This course may also be of interest to elementary teachers, teacher educators, and teachers of other disciplines who use data-based explorations extensively to make claims and inferences (e.g., science, social science). This course has attracted about 2500 educators from 50 states and 84 countries over the past 18 months. A great opportunity to learn with others around the world who care about improving their practice in teaching statistics content!
