Math Teacher's Circle 2017-2018
Math Teacher's Circle will be held the first Thursday of each month, alternating between Westlake HS and Taylorsville HS from 4-6pm. Any and all math teachers, as well as any other interested parties may attend and are encouraged to do so.
What is a Math Teacher's Circle? It is like a book club for math. We first start with a delicious meal while informally socializing. After about half an hour we jump in and work on an interesting math problem in small groups. After about an hour of productive struggle, we come together and share our solution strategies and discuss implications of using this type of approach in our math classes and other pedagogical issues.
Math Teacher's Circles are fun and invigorating. You work with quality people. You discuss interesting ideas. It is free and you get free food. And you will be done in time to spend the evening with your family.
Give it a try! After the first meeting, you can decide if it is for you. And you might even want to recruit others to come.
For more information, or just to let me know you are coming so I can plan for food, contact me, Troy Jones: tjones at alpinedistrict.org<mailto:tjones at alpinedistrict.org>

Free STEM Competition for U.S. High Schools – January 13, 2018
The General Aviation Manufacturers Association (GAMA) hosts an annual competition, the Aviation Design Challenge, to promote STEM skills in U.S. high school students through aviation. We recently opened registration for the 2018 competition, and are hoping you can help us spread the word to Utah high schools.
The competition is open to the first 110 high schools that enter or until Jan. 13, 2018. There are 51 slots left. The competition is free – we provide a curriculum and software through a partnership with Fly to Learn and X-Plane. The winning team receives an all-expenses-paid, two-week trip to experience general aviation manufacturing firsthand.
You can learn more about the Aviation Design Challenge, and register, on our website<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__bit.ly_2idxzkF&d=DwMFAg&c=fGrSkuu3YyS91PacIZP0XfO0GRH7JgL5znLEO6-CQG0&r=hD1RgVtVAfjHqM6ipl7VgIa9sOnyksaDjm7Cex6HZqan_jJHJ-cb-QMyiG7IG6q9&m=WGLs1NhdFxaSUtFbV4L7RRXUlOkU3kSZ-bVJ2f2Z_bg&s=GeX3oegGZ7uwnOt8zxeDKl-EE7QqDtTfDpiDx4j4Soc&e=>.
