Courses start September 7th, 2017 and you can now register through UEN by going here (registration closes September 6th): http://www.uen.org/development/usoe/math/index.shtml Courses available for enrollment: ? Principles to Actions: An Overview ? Magnifying 8th Grade Mathematics ? Magnifying 6th Grade Mathematics For more information on each course, please see below: Principles to Actions: An Overview Want to increase your capacity to ensure the mathematical success for all students in your classroom, school, and community? Join us in the Principles to Actions course examining mathematical teaching practices and guiding principles for school mathematics. The primary source used in this course is the recent NCTM publication Principles to Actions. Participants will receive an electronic version of the book Principles to Actions (available in print version $28 at NCTM.org). Our learning objectives are: * Understand and implement the guiding principles for school mathematics to improve the quality of mathematics instruction. * Understand and implement the mathematical teaching practices to increase student learning. * Work with colleagues to establish an educational community that incorporates mathematical teaching practices and guiding principles. * Increase capacity with content of the Utah core mathematics standards. Online, 1.0 SUU or USBE credit hour. Course starts September 7th, 2017 Magnifying 8th Grade Mathematics Eighth grade is an essential part of students? middle school mathematical experience. In the course, Magnifying 8th grade Mathematics, we will take a deep look into what makes 8thgrade mathematics unique and the essential understandings that every student needs to leave 8th grade knowing to be confident in high school mathematics. We will identify key differences between the 8th grade and 9th grade concepts so that math educators are familiar with the separation between the two grade levels. We will also connect prior learning from 7th grade mathematics and discuss how 8th grade teachers can use this to help their student?s become successful in learning the 8th grade core. Course starts Online, 1.0 SUU or USOE credit hour. Course starts September 7th, 2017 Magnifying 6th Grade Mathematics This course highlights connections between sixth grade standards and standards from grades below and beyond sixth grade. Participants will focus on understanding how particular sixth grade standards build conceptual understandings that support future learning while other standards are a procedural culmination of previous grades. Math, at all levels, should be taught conceptually with the use of various representations such as concrete models, drawings and diagrams, and equations. This course demonstrates the use of such representations and offers participants the opportunity to engage in creating their own models. Participants will gain ideas for engaging students in activities that develop positive attitudes and dispositions, build essential understandings, and promote a growth mindset with regard to mathematics. ECO Challenge Dear Middle & High School Teachers, On behalf of Thanksgiving Point, we formally invite you and your students to be involved in the Explore, Create, Observe (ECO) Challenge during the 2017/2018 school year! What is the ECO Challenge? The ECO Challenge is a multidisciplinary, environmental education program designed to give high school students, grades 7th-12th, the opportunity to learn about green careers and how they can make a difference in their communities. By appealing to their innate sense of creativity and curiosity, ECO Challenge invites students to investigate difficult environmental challenges, devise imaginative and effective responses, and take action to address them. Beginning in the Fall of 2017, students are invited to our Green Careers Day, where they can meet professionals working in science and engineering careers from state agencies, industry, and non-profit organizations. They learn about the needs of these groups related to the challenge and spend the next several months designing and prototyping solutions to address the challenge in ways that make sense to them. From producing public service announcements to inventions in aid conservation efforts, students selected unique and authentic ways to contribute their ideas and solutions. In the spring, students present their prototype products to industry representatives and compete for prizes that help their schools provide real-world environmental science in the coming year. Last year was a resounding success, with more than 700 students participating from 15 different schools across the state. One student comments: ?The ECO Challenge showed me that a lot of people in the world care for the environment, and that I wasn?t alone or trying to help something that was impossible to save.? We are really looking forward to next year and are excited for what we have planned to make ECO Challenge 2017/2018 an even bigger success! Green Careers Day is planned for September 21, 2018, so be sure to mark your calendars for the beginning of this program. If you would like to know more about the ECO Challenge or would like to sign up your school/classroom, please reach out to Lindsey McBride, Community Experiences Coordinator, 801.768.7480 or challenge at thanksgivingpoint.org. We hope you will immerse your students in an authentic, hands-on environmental science program! ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Please note: These are opportunities that have been requested to be shared with the Utah math and science teacher community.
