The Toyota-BYU Applied Math Initiative (TAMI) will run a workshop for mathematics teachers interested in learning more about how math is applied in the real world. Utah high school and middle school math teachers are invited to participate, at no cost, and join industry and university professionals for four days of presentations and networking. The TAMI workshop will be Monday June 8, 2015 through Thursday June 11, 2015 from 9am to 4pm at Brigham Young University (BYU) in Provo, UT. A $200 stipend will be given to the first 25 teachers who register and attend all sessions of the workshop. Breakfast and lunch will also be provided. The workshop is funded by Toyota Corporation. Possible workshop topics include:

?       The math behind Disney and Pixar movies

?       Non-academic careers for math students

?       Mathematics and games (e.g., Sudoku, Set, etc.)

?       Math, origami, engineering, and space exploration

?       Using math to find the optimal pizza in Provo/Orem

?       How math is changing sports

More information regarding the 2015 UCTM Conference:  If you haven?t already heard, UCTM is planning an exciting 2015 conference November 6-7th at Lehi High School.  Steve Leinwand, lead author of the book ?Principles to Actions,? will be the keynote speaker.  The Eight Mathematics Teaching Practices with the other Guiding Principles for School Mathematics (Access and Equity, Curriculum, Tools and Technology, Assessment, and Professionalism) are the focus of this year?s conference. Sessions are 50 minutes long and presenters? registration fee to attend the conference is waived.  This allows you to not only hear from Steve Leinwand and other professionals like yourself, but to also enjoy the Ignite session.

Core Revisions/Edits: The Secondary Mathematics Core Review Draft went before the Board on May 7th. Thank you to those who have emailed saying you would be willing to host. Dates/locations will come out soon, but if you are still interested in hosting, please let me know this week- you just need to provide space and attend. I am looking to be in about five different areas across the state between June 10th and July 15th? send an email if you have a location available.
