From ALLISON.DUNCAN at canyonsdistrict.org Wed May 2 09:27:12 2012 From: ALLISON.DUNCAN at canyonsdistrict.org (Duncan, Allison) Date: Wed, 2 May 2012 15:27:12 +0000 Subject: [CSD Math MS] Math CRTs Message-ID: Good morning! It?s that time of year again! CRT Testing! Woot woot! Some of you have already started testing and some will be starting very shortly...so to help dispel some confusion and to prevent potential confusion, let me clarify: * 7th grade will be taking the 2007 Utah Math 7 Core CRT as per the state assessment dept. * 8th grade will be taking the 2007 Pre-Algebra CRT WITH A NEW NAME: Common Core Math 8 as per the state assessment dept. Many of our common core math 8 students took Pre-Algebra last year and thus took the Pre-Algebra CRT last year. Since students cannot take the same test twice, the state assessment dept simply put a new name on an old CRT to solve this problem for now (because there is currently NOT a CRT aligned to the Utah Common Core). And to ease the burden on you so you don?t have to differentiate between which 8th graders took Math 7 last year and who took Pre-Algebra last year, we are having ALL 8th graders take the Common Core Math 8 CRT....which is the Pre-Algebra CRT with a new name. I hope this helps clarify which classes take which test. As you know, all non-common core classes will take their regularly scheduled CRTs. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. Thank you all so much for the hard work this past year with the implementation of 7th and 8th grade. Happy Wednesday! This is a training that fills up fast and is not offered to all teachers. Canyons has the unique opportunity to offer this training to interested teachers in our district. Though we will not be able to compensate you for your time, you will be rewarded with relicensure and possibly CACTUS credit. Plus lunch will be provided! This will be a great opportunity for middle school teachers to get a refresher course on the 7th and 8th grade core and for high school teachers to get a sneak peak of what they will be teaching in 10th grade. If you are interested, please register through On-Track https://usoe.truenorthlogic.com/ia/render.userLayoutRootNode.uP login is your firstname.lastname and your password is your CACTUS ID number. Search for secondary mathematics core academy. Happy Wednesday! Allison From: "Suddreth, Diana" > Date: Tue, 1 May 2012 16:00:50 -0600 To: Secondary listserve > Subject: [SecondaryMath] Core Academy There is still room in most of the secondary mathematics core academy sessions (Grades 7, 8, and Secondary II). Since this is likely the only year that these courses will be offered, we hope you will take advantage of this professional development whether or not your district is supporting you with incentives. Please also be aware that the design of the academy is NOT a trainer of trainer model, therefore, for teachers to get full benefit of the academy, they should attend this summer rather than waiting for professional development during the year that may not be as comprehensive. There are several opportunities to attend the academy throughout Utah and it is also permissible for teachers to attend more than one. For example, 7th grade teachers may wish to attend an 8th grade session nearby if room is available so they will be equipped with knowledge and skill to teach both 7th and 8th grade. Similarly, teachers who teach high school may attend the Secondary II sessions, even if they are not assigned to teach Secondary II during the coming year. At this time there are NO restrictions or district or charter limits on who may attend. Teachers may register themselves through OnTrack at any convenient location whether or not the session lies within their immediate district. Registration will be closing soon so that we have time to order materials and catering for this summer. I hope you will sign up to attend! Message-ID: Happy May and CRT Testing to you all! I hope CRT testing is going well...and that you are all gearing up for summer break...woo woo! I have sent out emails about this before, but I?m doing one last call. I need some more math teachers to participate in the Math-in-CTE training this summer. This program is focused on enhancing math concepts in the CTE classroom as well as provide math teachers with a cross-curricular ideas to use in their classrooms. Math teachers will work side by side with a CTE teacher to help them identify standards in the CTE curriculum where math is naturally found. Then they?ll help the CTE teacher develop lesson plans focused on reinforcing the math concepts in the CTE classroom. Meanwhile, YOU, the math teacher, is getting ideas on how to incorporate cross-curricular concepts into your classroom and will get a plethora of real world examples of when they will actually use math. I have heard from many of you that you would like to participate, but I still need more teachers. The dates are: Math in Engineering: June 27 - 29: I need 1 MS teacher and 1 HS teacher. Math in FACS (family and consumer science): June 25 ? 28: I need 2 MS teachers and 2 High School teachers. You will receive a very nice stipend for your time and the opportunity to work with someone outside of your dept.! Please let me know ASAP if you are interested. It will focus on 7th, 8th, and 10th grades. A great opportunity to refresh and review for 7th and 8th grade and get a sneak peek on 10th grade. Canyons School District will be offering training for 9th grade MS teachers June 11 ? 14. Thanks! Allison From: , Diana > Date: Thursday, May 17, 2012 7:19 AM Subject: summer Core Academy Time is running out to register for the summer Core Academy. Some classes are nearing (or at) capacity, but a few classes, especially in 7th and 8th grade have plenty of room, even in locations along the Wasatch Front. Please be aware that the 7th and 8th grade sessions are different, so if you teach both courses, you are encouraged to attend both, you just can?t do them both in the same location. Take your family to Vernal for a dinosaur adventure while you spend your days in the academy, or enjoy the Shakespearean Festival in the evenings in Cedar City when you finish your daily classes. Also remember to encourage colleagues in special education or ELS to attend. Invite your principal to spend the whole week learning about math. Don?t miss this exciting opportunity. To register or view available classes, log into OnTrack and search on core academy. If you are already on a waiting list, this would be a great time to switch to another location nearby. Hurry, registration closes May 22.
